Applications

[edit]

What are the applications of SLEDs? I feel the article would benefit from a section covering current and potential applications of the technology. I'm far from an expert in the area so don't feel qualified to add anything myself. Prosthetic Head (talk) 14:54, 20 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

2nd'ed. Also are SLEDs the same as the 'superluminous diodes' used in some types of laser therapy ? - Rod57 (talk) 13:28, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There is a list of applications on a photonics encyclopaedia [1]. Prosthetic Head (talk) 10:46, 15 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've added an initial go at an applications section based on the linked photonics encyclopaedia. Please do expand / edit it! Prosthetic Head (talk) 11:01, 15 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This was put in the history section, I believe it belongs here on the talk page

(This needs to be edited. There is an article in the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, Volume QE-9, No. 8, August 1973 titled "A Strip-Geometry Double-Heterostructure Amplified-Spontaneous-Emission (Superluminescent) Diode" by Tien-Pei Lee, Charles A. Burrus, Jr. and B. I. Miller. I don't know if this paper is the first superluminescent diode but both papers predate 1986. The 1973 paper makes reference to "INVESTIGATION OF SUPERLUMINESCENCE EMITTED BY A GALLIUM ARSENIDE DIODE" in the SOVIET PHYSICS SEMICONDUCTORS-USSR Volume: 4 Issue: 11 Pages: 1739-& Published: 1971, but I don't have access to that article)
