I am mentioning an individual who, in 2019, edited the list of sultans in this article by adding Syed Sagoff as the Regent of the Sultanate of Siak Sri Indrapura.
Sultan Syarif Kasim passed away in 1908, and the Dutch East Indies government appointed Syarif Kasim as his successor. Due to his young age, he was accompanied by Tengku Besar Syarif Sagoff (his cousin) and Datuk Lima Puluh (whose name is not mentioned) who acted as regents (Jamil et al., Sejarah Kerajaan Siak).
Firstly, a monarch's regent cannot be considered a monarch in their own right. There appears to be virtually no tradition that supports this notion anywhere in the world; otherwise, lists of monarchs would be longer.
Secondly, Sayyid Sagoff did not act as a regent alone. He was accompanied by one of the high-ranking officials of the sultanate, Datuk Lima Puluh. Datuk Lima Puluh was one of four hereditary positions that have formed the Sultanate of Siak since its inception.
By these facts, I removed Syed Sagoff in the list of Siak Sultan. Harris Est 13 (talk) 13:36, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
