[edit]This is worthless. It should be radically improved or deleted. Nicmart (talk) 16:13, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
- I agree it needs much work. Considering that Guyana ranks far above all other countries in suicide, I don't think it should be deleted though. Would you be interested in helping to improve the article? Looks like there are some good sources on google scholar and jstor. I'll see what I can do about fleshing out the article in the near future. And renaming the "popular suicides" section, that one is a doozy. <> Alt lys er svunnet hen (talk) 00:10, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
- I've got a sandbox going for this article at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Alt_lys_er_svunnet_hen/sandbox . I haven't added my sources yet but they include Guyana: From Slavery to the Present Vol 2 by Gampat, Guyana Junction, and a cross-sectional study published in Clinical Practice and Epidemiology in Mental Health. I'm nowhere near done with the body, haven't touched the lede or refs, but I feel this is a good start. I named the main subsection "Research," though maybe we could try to build it like at Suicide in Australia. I'll keep at it. <> Alt lys er svunnet hen (talk) 23:20, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- I've added the above changes to the article and removed the unsourced tag. There's still more that can be done with the article, though. <> Alt lys er svunnet hen (talk) 20:02, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

The mass suicide/killing of 1978 took place in Guyana, but virtually all the victims were from the USA, and had just recently followed Jones there to start his cult colony there. I don't think is relevant to the suicide rate of Guyanese--only if this clarification were included would the mention of the Jim Jones event make any sense here.BillDeeUS (talk) 21:01, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
- Well, it looks like that clarification has been added, albeit without a source and rather awkwardly phrased. I would note that the article is not about the suicide rate of Guyanese people, it is about suicide IN Guyana. As a highly prominent event in Guyana, I think it would be a big omission if we did not mention Jonestown at all. I would argue that the larger issues are that the event described in the lede is not described at all in the article body, and framing it in the lede as a cult raises NPOV issues, as we see in the Jonestown article. It isn't referred to as a cult in the lede of that article, and later on is used "only to mention that it has been referred to as such by various individuals." They had a very protracted debate about this over there and I see no need to rehash it here. I'm going to fix the grammatical errors in that last sentence of the lede, & change "cult" to "group" or something similiar. It looks like perhaps 9 of the 918 dead were Guyanese, though we need a source for that. I suggest we also add a blurb at the end of the article about Jonestown to give the statements in the lede a reason to be there. <>Alt lys er svunnet hen (talk) 23:35, 16 November 2016 (UTC)
