Nice article! I did a quick lit search and found an article on resistant aminoglycoside genes found in fecal matter and soils on a swine farm in China. They also mentioned clonal transfer in addition to horizontal gene transfer. The wiki page talks about these antibiotics having pretty bad side-effects in humans, but you could add it to your page. Well done topic! If there is one thing to add in somewhere...perhaps when defining 'antibiotic resistance' I would work in something about background antibiotic resistance and how resistance is based on genetics composition and may vary from species to species even though subtherapeutic antibiotic use could still perpetuate this resistance. commentary about antibiotic use in pork in Denmark
[edit]I am not the pork expert in the house, but I do live with one. The paragraph near the end of the article that mentions the restrictions of the use of sub therapeutic antibiotics in pork production in Denmark, it fails to mention that while total antibiotic use in pork production went down in pork production in Denmark, animals were being treated at therapeutic levels at a point in production where the animals were older / larger went up. Meaning that because antibiotics are dosed on a mg/kg basis, a larger dose is needed for a larger pig. Also, the underlying purpose of eliminating the use of sub-therapeutic levels of antibiotics in pigs was to (hopefully) reduce the incidence of antibiotic resistant infections in humans, a noticeable result of that did not happen.
