Name, policy and notability?

[edit]

Starting with the article's current name "Reform Party", I strongly question the corectness of this translation from the Icelandic name to English. As a Dane, I can only read and understand 20% of the Icelandic words, but when I had to translate some other Icelandic words during the last couple of days, I however found the word structure follow more or less the same as for Danish. So when translating with a not too perfect dictionary, it often helps to divide the extended word into its individual components. This mean we shall translate the party name as "Fram fara flokkurinn", which translates to "forward go political party" or converted to more plain English "Forward Moving Party". So I will suggest we change the translated Party name to this instead.

In this section, I will now point out some of the arguments behind why my new translated name is more correct. In English, I think the word "Progressive" is more commonly used compared to "Forward Moving". But in the Scandinavian languages we have a slight difference between the meaning of those words, which by the way is prooved by the fact that the title "Progressive Party" in Iceland already belong to the party with the name Framsóknar-flokkurinn. In Scandinavia, it is in example possible to "advance" or "move forward" (which only mean you change status quo to a percieved better state - which in principle however can be in any kind of direction - also possibly in a strict national conservative direction), meaning the change does not necessarily have to be "progressive" (which in Danish means you have to change things in a forward looking modern way, with the purpose of adapting society to the new modern future at the forefront of the wave). When comparing with Progress Party (Norway) and Progress Party (Denmark), which in the local language is translated respectively to "Framskrittspartiet" and "Fremskridtspartiet", this is for the direct comparison of the literal meaning of the words equal to the word "Framfara-flokkurinn"; so it actually has nothing to do with the word to be "progressive" (when it is spelled and used this way in our Scandinavian language); meaning it would be more correct translating it to the "Forward Moving Party" (although I admit "Progress party" is not directly wrong). Searching some more at Icelandic web pages, I however found that Framfara-flokkurinn in no way is related to the same political program as the "similar named" parties in Denmark/Norway - and neither is the Progressive Party (Iceland). So we should avoid making any cross border comparisons in this particular case, only based on the similar name. :-)

Beside of that, it seems like nobody really know -even in Iceland- what the exact politics really is of this new "Framfara-flokkurinn" party. The founder of the party has been described as a "protester". Visiting the party's website, there is however really nothing to see. Only thing we know is, that they in Q1-2009 collected more than 300 signatures to be rewarded the election letter A, but then subsequently failed to recruit enough candidates to actually represent the party and participate in the April 2009 election. For this reason, the related Icelandic Wikipedia page decided in December 2012 entirely to delete their Wikipedia article about the party. Here in January 2013, it has however been rumoured the party will again attempt to run for the April 2013 election. If they do so, I will vote to keep this article, but if they dont run either in 2013, then I really think we should also delete the article here at the English Wikipedia (for notability reasons). Do you agree? Danish Expert (talk) 00:26, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

On basis of the note above, I have now renamed the article from "Reform Party" to "Forward Moving Party". Danish Expert (talk) 08:27, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As the party on 5 April 2013 was renamed to Sturla Jónsson and approved to participate with a list in the Reykjavik South constituency for the 2013 election, this in my point of view now has attracted enough notability to keep the article about this party alive. The article has now been renamed to the new name of the party, while the former name Forward Mowing Party has been left only to work as a redirect link. Move discussion in progress

[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Reform Party (Iceland, 2016) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 05:18, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
