I've lived in Portland all my life, and I pronounce it the way it's spelled, as do all of my friends. And everybody I've ever talked to about the place. In fact, this is the first time I've ever heard of it being pronounced "stump-ton." Not going to correct that, because I could totally be wrong, but that still seems a little bit out there.
shouldnt this be a disamb. page? "Stumptown" is a nickname for portland. the coffee company is "Stumptown Coffee Roasters". what of other stumptown-named companies and such?
Agreed, this should be disamb'd. The nickname "Stumptown" is distinct from all of the businesses and organizations that use the term in their names.
Noteworthy entities
[edit]I just removed Stumptown Singles from the list because it doesn't seem to be a noteworthy entity in Portland. If some people besides obvious promotional folks can vouch for it, maybe it should be re-added. For now, I made the call and removed it. For the record, here are the Google hits for current entities: Stumptown Coffee Roasters has 962 hits (while "Stumptown Coffee" returns 30,500); Stumptown Comics Fest has 313 hits; Stumptown Singles (+portland) has 11 (with at least one being a reference to West Virginia's Stumptown). I've never heard of Portland referred to as Stumptown because of a supposed lack of tall buildings. Out of the 50 states, Portland's 546 ft Wells Fargo Center is perhaps slightly below average for a skycraper in a large U.S. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.222.40.209 (talk) 01:02, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
