History

The oldest streets are those around the Moorish Castle that was built in the 12th century as a new city. So the street now known as Crutchets Ramp" had the older name of Villa Vieja. Today the street is also known as La Calera after the Spanich word for a lime kiln. The traditional names of all the streets were largely replaced when official English names were agreed in 1870. However this caused confusion at the time and many streets still have two names.[1]
