According to Peter Butterworth's wiki page, Johns was a prisoner-of-war in Stalag Luft III, along with him and 'Maigret' actor Rupert Davies. Valetude (talk) 14:04, 6 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have changed the opening "best remembered for his starring role as Detective Inspector Charlie Barlow in the long-running BBC police series Softly, Softly: Task Force." as I do not think this is a particularly accurate statement. The Barlow character first appears in Z-Cars and then was spun-off into Softly, Softly, with Softly, Softly: Task Force being the third series he appeared in. He also was in less than half of that series, being spun-off into his own eponymous series Barlow at Large / Barlow. Thus of the 6 series the character was in (7 if you include a cameo in The Two Ronnies), Task Force was not the best known. Also he was not a Detective Inspector in Task Force being a Detective Chief Superintendent (indeed he was a already a DCI by the time he first appeared in Z-Cars. I have gone for "best remembered for playing the role as senior CID officer Charlie Barlow a character he originated in the early years of the long-running BBC police series Z-Cars, and then continued to play in several spin-off series in the 1960s and 1970s" which I think is better, but am happy to discuss further.
