Merge?

Should this article be merged with the article Traditional lighting equipment of Japan? Both articles link to the Japanese article ja:灯籠 (Tōrō), and the Japanese article links to the English article Lantern. Boneyard90 (talk) 18:03, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

I believe the link between Traditional lighting equipment of Japan and the Japanese article is what's wrong: there's far more than Tōrō in Japanese traditional lighting. I think that interwiki link should go. All else should stay as it is. Frank (Urashima Tarō) (talk) 19:19, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Thinking about it, I think you misunderstand. These two article can't be merged because they cover different ground. The tōrō is just one of many types of traditional lanterns. It has many more variants than the others, and it needs a separate article. So the articles are both necessary, and should stay separate. Frank (Urashima Tarō) (talk) 06:52, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Mismatch between title and content

I think that the title, "Stone lanterns" is misleading and fails to accurately describe this article's topic. It does contain a major section on them (Stone lantern § Stone lanterns), but alongside sections on bronze and hanging lanterns. Its real topic seems to be the Japanese "tōrō" 灯籠, which, according to Wiktionary, are "outdoor lanterns for lighting shrines and temples". The lead confusingly lists tōrō as the Japanese word for stone lantern, which is rather "ishi-dōrō" 石灯籠, before later parts of the article contradict this translation by describing tsuri-dōrō "made in metal, copper or wood". I suspect "Stone lantern" was chosen over "Tōrō" as a title in order to present a less Japan-centric view of the topic, which is fair enough given that, as the lead mentions, the stone lanterns have a history in China, but it is not appropriate to list all kinds of tōrō under this name. Because § Stone lanterns is long enough to constitute an article on its own, I would propose that the sections on bronze and hanging lanterns get moved into a separate article called "Tōrō", along with a smaller section on ishi-dōrō linking here, leaving only the stone-lantern-relevant information on this page. @SmallJarsWithGreenLabels: sounds good to me; tōrō have more than enough content written about them to stand alone, as they're a very specific type of lantern. I could even name a traditional Japanese hairstyle named after tōrō, they're so eponymous.

As a side note related to this article; do you think there's a better article title than "Traditional lighting equipment of Japan"? It sounds vaguely clunky of theatre-related to me, but I can't think of an alternative title it could use.--Ineffablebookkeeper (talk) ({{ping}} me!) 14:59, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

This needs fixing one way or another. It is nonsense to say that a lantern made of metal or wood is a stone lantern. Nurg (talk) 03:44, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
