Writing style

"Since the 2012 mayoral elections the area has been subject to "gentrification" under Mayor George Furguson" This sentence is very odd - these processes don't turn on and off immediately. Nothing on the recent events of Tesco's protests?
It was reported internationally in news media so there should definitely be at least a note on it.
