Irish translation
[edit]Why has his name got an Irish translation when most other articles for Irish footballers such as Shay Given and Robbie Keane don't? Spiderone (talk) 09:16, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
- Because once upon a time, an editor decided to add Irish translations to all sorts of articles, including Robbie Keane, and this one never got reverted. Although it has been now. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:28, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
Caps
[edit]The career section says he has 38 caps, but it's 39. There's 2 caps for 2009, but there's three. It looks like his cap against Bulgaria in June was not counted - http://www.fai.ie/ireland/match/17/2010/301852 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tetsujin1979 (talk • contribs) 22:55, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
- @Tetsujin1979: Thank you for spotting that. It appears to stem from a typo on FIFA's original webpage for that match, whereby O'Shea and Telkiyski came off in the 82nd minute, Dimitrov is listed as replacing both of them (!), and Kelly didn't come on at all. Which means that FIFA haven't recorded Kelly's appearance in that match, so NFT haven't recorded it, and on it goes. I've changed the figures and added a note. Pity the FAI's player list doesn't include him at all – perhaps they were as confused as the rest of us... thanks again, Struway2 (talk) 10:25, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Stephen Kelly (Irish footballer) → Stephen Kelly (Irish association footballer) – Ambiguous identifier, there are more types of Irish football than association footballer, such as Gaelic football Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 10:09, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
- COMMENT I'd rather Stephen Kelly (footballer, born 1983) since I don't think (association footballer) is a standard disambiguator at WP:NCSP. Obviously nationality and even sport isn't a good enough disambiguator right now.--Ortizesp (talk) 22:12, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose association footballer is not a standard disambiguator. Fine with (footballer, born 1983), as that does sufficiently disambiguate from the two Gaelic footballers of the same name. Joseph2302 (talk) 08:56, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- Note: This discussion has been included in WikiProject Football's list of association football-related page moves. GiantSnowman 12:41, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose as suggested, and instead support move to Stephen Kelly (footballer, born 1983), a format used in Category:Republic of Ireland association footballers. GiantSnowman 12:43, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- I now agree with the above re naming the article to year of birth disambiguator - I didn't check the WP:NCSP well enough and now noticed from the category provided that there are no other page names with "association footballer" in any of these titles. So it is better to move to "(footballer, born 1983)" instead of "(Irish association footballer)" in the nomination. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 16:56, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- Comment Agree per Ortizesp and GS. If we rename should follow that. Govvy (talk) 16:58, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- Support Stephen Kelly (footballer, born 1983), our standard disambiguation for footballers. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:42, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
Retired?
[edit]Not much new in the article, did he retire from the game? The Irish Sun is suggestive, but it's not accurate. Govvy (talk) 17:39, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- It is likely he has even though sources appears to be hard to find. Pinging @OscarLake: to ask why the user has changed the article to retirement status without a source to prove that. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 20:54, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- Transfermarkt had him listed as retired. Also, if a footballer born in 1983 hasn't played professionally in three (now four) consecutive seasons, then it's not a stretch by any means to assume that his career is over. Should he return to football, I would see it as a comeback (not too dissimilar to Marc Overmars' return in 2008). But ultimately, I don't really care if you remove "former". It's just that a lot of footballers on Wikipedia who are pushing 40, or even past that age, have their careers still written in present tense. Very few editors care about those kind of articles. OscarL 12:54, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
- Transfermarkt is not a reliable source, as per WP:TRANSFERMARKT. If a reliable source says same thing, we should definitely change him to retired. Joseph2302 (talk) 20:17, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
