Gender of genus name
[edit]When the species name is an adjective, sources are inconsistent in the gender assigned to the genus name Stenoterommata. Stenoterommata platensis is the type species named by Holmberg, 1881, who erected the genus. The adjective platensis can be either masculine or feminine, but not neuter (which would have been platense). The derivation isn't very helpful, since -ommata derives from ὄμματα, "eyes", which is neuter plural, but the ICZN requires genus names to be singular.
The choice seems to be between feminine and neuter endings. Feminine is consistent with Holmberg's choice of platensis; neuter corresponds to the gender of the Greek stem of the name, although it is of the wrong number.
Feminine:
- Stenoterommata guttulata Simon, 1886
- Stenoterommata tenuistyla Goloboff, 1995 – used by Ferretti et al., 2010
- The World Spider Catalog, as of April 2016, consistently uses feminine endings.
Neuter:
- Stenoterommata platense Simon, 1892
- Stenoterommata maculatum Mello-Leitão, 1947
- Stenoterommata argentinense (Schiapelli & Gerschman, 1958) – transferred by Raven, 1985
- Stenoterommata tenuistylum Goloboff, 1995
- Stenoterommata crassistylum Goloboff, 1995
I've chosen to go with the World Spider Catalog for the genus and the species articles, i.e. use the feminine forms. I'd like to put a discussion in the article, but at present it would be OR/SYNTH. Peter coxhead (talk) 20:07, 16 April 2016 (UTC)
