Merge Discussion
[edit]- Stemmer and stemming algorithm should be merged into a single article called 'Stemming', which should discuss 'stemmers' and 'stemming algorithms'. (Jfroelich Dec 2006). I would also remove the commericial references. Also, can anyone point out the why the 'See Also' section contains a link to an article about the asterisk?
- Yes, I think this article should be merged with stemming algorithm. Spalding 21:21, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
- Please merge them. (Bob Carpenter, September 2006)
- I think the most appropriate action would be to merge stemmer into stemming algorithm. The name "stemmer" may be the known name in the technology community, but "stemming algorithm" is the fully descriptive, proper grammer title.
I agree that the primary article should be Stemming Algorithm, Stemmer having been merged into it. Any encyclopedia should have ease of searching as a primary objective, and only those already knowledgable about the subject are likely to look for stemmer. treesmill 22:20, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
- Based on this discussion I am merging Stemmer into Stemming algorithm. I hope this does not frustrate anyone and it can be reverted if necessary. I also plan on some minor improvements to the page to make the content fit together. It would help if someone reviewed my work after. Josh Froelich 03:28, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- I now redirect this, along with stemming algorithm, to stemming. Josh Froelich 17:07, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
Suggestions
[edit]It might be wise to include descriptions of overstemming and understemming Josh Froelich 03:15, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
As a dab page, a stemmer is...
[edit]Stemmer is the title, so all three entries are saying "stemmer". Now if you read the article on Stemming (see above discussions), you will see the word stemmer is a process that includes stemming, but is not limited to it. It may be true that a stemmer and its stemming have opposite directions, (and that the stemming article merged the stemmer article), but this dab page entry is about stemmers, not stemming. — CpiralCpiral 19:51, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
- Ok, there are two issues here. Firstly, MOS:DAB says that "The article title should appear exactly as it is on the target page", except in a few circumstances that don't apply here, as far as I can tell. More importantly, a stemmer is a program or algorithm that does stemming, which is to produce the stem from inflected forms, not the other way around: [1], [2], [3]. I've never seen anyone call a program that performs the inverse action a "stemmer", and I'm not sure which part of stemming you're referring to (is it Stemming § The production technique?). - You refer to MOS:DABENTRY. I admit this, and we can apply this. But our first issue is exactly MOS:DABPAGENAME and WP:DABRELATED. Applied in order: Stemmer, a linguistic or information retrieval process in stemming. (Minor issue.)
(The major issue.) You appear to be right, Qwertyus. I may have been looking at the stemmer's result from the inverted index POV. Thanks. — CpiralCpiral 23:47, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
