Incorrect Name

[edit]

The official spelling of the village's name is Sainte-Marie-Saint-Raphael, according to Regulation 85-6 under the Municipalities Act.

I see what you are saying however I went based on the signage of the village even though it is in french. http://www.ste-marie-st-raphael.ca

I know what you mean however, I thought we are suppose to go based on the official spelling of the village in wikipedia as I understand it. I was told by someone else that englishification of places especially in a bilingual province is wrong, even for an english language wikipedia page. Let me know what you find out.22:39, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

I understand; somebody didn't understand the difference between anglicising a French name and giving the official form of a name that's often written informally.

Here's the link for the full French text of Regulation 85-6: http://laws.gnb.ca/fr/showfulldoc/cr/85-6//20150210; even if you don't read French, the headings are sufficient for proper spellings. There's a similar page for the local service districts at http://laws.gnb.ca/fr/showfulldoc/cr/84-168//20150210. Both documents are up to date, which means that anything that's been repealed (like all the LSDs that went into Grand Tracadie-Sheila) won't appear. G. Ste-Marie-St-RaphaëlSainte-Marie-Saint-Raphaël – Official spelling of the name does not use abbreviations, as supported by Regulation 85-6 and Geographical Names Board of Canada G. Timothy Walton (talk) 17:31, 17 August 2015 (UTC) --Relisted. George Ho (talk) 01:11, 25 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment, the issue is not only one of official vs. abbreviation. To non-French speakers, 'Ste' is not recognisable in the way 'St' is, therefore I tend towards Support as both more 'correct' and clearer.Pincrete (talk) 10:16, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
