Britannica 11th plague!
[edit]This article "incorporates text from" the eleventh edition of Britannica? I don't think so. This has every hallmark of being the article from the eleventh edition of Britannica with some fairly minor and largely cosmetic decoration by people who are actually alive. I really wish it were not possible to rip articles out of Britannica 11, because it's not like the articles in Britannica from that period are conspicuously well-written by contemporary standards. They are riddled with purple prose, psychological speculation and unsupported assertions that wouldn't last a second if this article were by a contemporary contributor. I'm sure that the Britannica staff fact-checked it back in the day, but they have not bothered to provide references for any of the stuff herein. I do not come away from this article feeling like I know more about Statius. I come away from it feeling like I have been told a charming but possibly imaginary story about him. That's not what I want from an encyclopedia. 83.71.11.199 (talk) 21:48, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Dante Template
[edit]I added the Dante template because, let's face it, that's probably why most people are here. Please message me if you wish to remove it.Artimaean (talk) 20:18, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
The Hunger for Gold quote
[edit]I'd like someone who knows something about Statius to help me with this if possible. A line keeps running through my head -- a meme I must have picked up long ago. Not sure of sourcing. May be Statius. Did he write something like this? If so, in what context? "With what tricks dost thou not endow the minds of men, oh accursed hunger for gold?"
