Betsy Ross

[edit]

This article claims that Ross is commonly thought to have made the flag that flew over Fort McHenry. I didn't find any recounting of that story on a quick Google search. I know the story that Ross made the first American flag at the request of George Washington in the 1770s, but I've never heard her connected to the Fort McHenry flag, let alone enough to claim that this is a "common" belief which deserves rebuttal in an encyclopedia. 71.129.81.136 15:20, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, and the link for the given reference is no longer valid. I'm going to remove that statement.GVP Webmaster (talk) 14:10, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Flag Price

[edit]

According to the Ft McHenry article the flag cost $574.44, but here it says 405.90 ... which is correct? Jrssr5 16:38, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

$574.44 was the total cost for the two flags commissioned. $405.90 is the actual cost for the article flag.Awotter (talk) 07:13, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal

[edit]

Star Spangled Banner Flag and Great Garrison Flag seem to refer to the same flag. I propose they are merged. bahamut0013 23:18, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I created the Great Garrison Flag page, as I noticed its absence. I didn't know that the Star Spangled Banner Flag page existed. A merger seems more than appropriate (though I'm sort of new to this, and wouldn't know how to do that). Which name is more appropriate though? It seems that the Great Garrison Flag is a more formal and/or traditional name, though Star Spangled Banner Flag might be more common in use, a sort of layman's term. Worry not, it is a simple matter of adding content to the base page and redirecting the other.
As to the name, I would imagine that the older page should remain as the name. We can add the secondary name to the article's intro.
In any case, I intend to give a few more days for some more editors to weigh in. bahamut0013 22:24, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've performed the merge and redirect. bahamut0013 04:56, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

star

[edit]

This documentary on the Smithsonian I'm watching on the Travel channel says that the 15th star was given to the widow of a soldier, not blown off. I don't know why, but I find this disparity fascinating and thirst for the truth. 66.65.41.238 (talk) 05:48, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

add info on bequest to Smithsonian

[edit]

I'm going to add some information on how the flag came to the Smithsonian. The information comes from the Smithsonian's website - references 7 and 8 - but I don't know how to add them into the article. Elsquared (talk) 23:16, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Adding graphic rendition of flag image

[edit]

Can anyone tell me what's so horrible about adding a graphic of the flag to the description section? I've tried twice, and am now being accused of an edit war. I added the graphic to show clearly the design of the flag, which, by the way, is present on many other articles about specific flags. olef641 (talk) 08:57, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It's a bit like adding a photo of a random horse to the article on Secretariat. There were probably millions of flags manufactured with that design, but this article is about a specific one. There are plenty of good images available that are more relevant to this specific flag, and I've added a few more to the article. (Though I do think the warning for edit warring for a single revert was overly harsh.) Toohool (talk) 05:37, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation. I thought it odd there was no graphic representation in a section clearly marked "description". olef641 (talk) 00:28, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
