Notability

[edit]

There are lots of grassroots groups in DC and other places. Not all should have Wikipedia articles. Maybe Stand Up should just be mentioned on the statehood page, especially if there are only going to be a few sentences. Are there reliable sources not affiliated with Stand Up that talk about it as important in the statehood movement? —KCinDC (talk) 17:26, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the notability template. Stand Up! [1] is, indeed, a notable organization and well known inside and outside the D of C. The fact that the article is a stub has nothing to do with the organization's importance. (Did you bother to Google it?) Stand Up! has been recognized by the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area [www.unanca.org] for its work and is one of the oldest organizations working for full voting rights for the District. Its members have been arrested multiple times for demonstrating in Congress and have been involved in litigation on behalf of statehood and its advocates. deeceevoice (talk) 02:07, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have nothing against Stand Up and have even been to a meeting or two. That has nothing to do with whether it's notable, however. If there is significant coverage in independent, reliable sources, then it should be possible to cite it. As I said, there are lots of grassroots groups in DC and other places. Many of them are mentioned in the paper or are involved in lawsuits. That doesn't mean they're notable. —KCinDC (talk) 05:36, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't suggested your adding the template was personal, so no need to issue a disclaimer. Stand Up! has gotten plenty of coverage, particularly when its members have been arrested for its activities before Congress. And, again, the fact that it was honored by the UN-NAC and made a presentation before the UN on the disenfranchised status of District residents, I think, qualifies it as notable. And, yes, it should be fairly easy to cite such information. I'm simply not actively working on the article at the moment (or much of anything else on Wikipedia). So, keep in mind it's still a stub. deeceevoice (talk) 15:06, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
