[edit]Can somebody confirm Stan's 'Macedonian' descent? This implies FYROM; although I always assumed he had a Greek background, particularly since his name sounds hellenic.|
- Of course he is Greek. The "Macedonian" thing was a POV edit by a well-known propagandist.-- Avg 13:28, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
Australia's squad includes wingback Stan Lazaridis, born in Perth of Greek parentage, while Greece's attack will be led by Manchester City's Giorgos Samaras, who has strong Melbourne connections and might well have turned out wearing green and gold national colours. Lazaridis, who has Greek heritage, said he was really excited about meeting the Euro 2004 champion Greece at the MCG on May 25 – the Socceroos' last hurrah before they head off to Europe. sources: [1] [2]|
- The only source that I know of is that of User GR MANOS. If user Makedonia has a source PROVING that Stan Lazaridis is not Greek, cite the source and I will gladly accept it.-- Avg 18:12, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
would any greek play for a (slav) macedonian football club??? NO he would not, and you all know that very well, if stan was a greek, he would never have played for stirling lions, and would never be in such a club wich uses the vergina star widely , that's just logical thinking, and you all know it. as for the name, also you all know that the Greeks after 1913 forced all macedonians and other minorities to change their surnames into greek sounding ones, lazar or lazareski became Lazaridis, Stavro or Stavroski became Stavros, so many of them kept their new forced greek names even if they moved out of Greece. ( Steve Staios, the Hockey player for example.) just drop your propagandical crap, he is was and will be macedonian, no greek. --Makedonia 23:06, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
- Check this out: [3] It's a Greek soccer forum where they talk about Stan Lazaridis and notice the last Greek guy mentioning Lazaridis was the best man of his sister's work colleague. I didn't know the two communities are in such good terms in Australia :-) -- Avg 23:18, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
hah yeah and my neighbour's cousin his niece said madonna is macedonian:P --Makedonia 23:28, 30 May 2006 (UTC) Stop posting bullshit. Lazaridis has 2 nationalities. Australian and Greek. http://www.footballdatabase.com/site/players/index.php?dumpPlayer=1422 GR_MANOS 14:50 (GMT+2), 31 May 2006 yeah of course he has greek nationality, because when he was born, the aegean part allready belonged to greece. his surname was changed by the greeks, some macedonians have kept their new-greek-changed names even when they emigrated to for example, Canada or Australia, for example Steve Staios the hockey player, Petros Dimtsis the Rainbow Party member in Lerin (florina), and there are many more. oh yeah you talk about greeks playing in rep of macedonia, or otherwise, but keep in mind, the diaspora is very diffirent and nationalism plays a big role. "5. Why did you change Thessaloniki’s name to Solun??? Why did you change the rest names to Slavic ones?? Did someone tell you that you did a bad thing?? No. You conquered the land and you changed their names. You aren’t the only ones that do that. Turkey for example, changed Constantinople name to Istanbul. No one grumbles about that. So stop grumbling." - so you agree with me and the rest of the macedonians, on the fact that Greece CONQUERED Macedonia, rather than liberating it. ;) --Makedonia 16:29, 31 May 2006 (UTC) The logical question is why this people don't change their name back to their previous surnames??? I mean it doesn't make any sense. If someone force you to change your name, then when you will change it back to your previous surname when you will have the chance. I'm not aware of any of the people that you are referring to so I can't tell. Especially it doesn't make any sense to keep the Greek nationality if you aren't Greek. I mean what is the point. Not to mention what is the point to speak a foreign language to you, when you don't even live in that country. ;) Keep in mind that 1-2 centuries ago, people in Macedonian are were changing their names and their "nationality" almost every week. That was a funny period. You even have a source cited in your user page about this funny thing. Of course Greek Macedonia is conquered. You can say that you liberate an area when less than 50% of the population in that area is Greek. ;) GR_MANOS 19:52 (GMT+2), 31 May 2006
- I read the email of user Makedonia. It is very clear that he is asked to leave Stan Lazaridis out of any nationalistic dispute, since he is loved from both Slav and Greek Macedonians in Australia. I will respect this and I hope user Makedonia does the same.-- Avg 20:40, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
It is quite obviously stupid to suggest that because Stan Lazaridis has played for a Slavomacedonian club that he must be of that ethnicity. In that case, Goran Lozanovski would have to be Greek because he played at South Melbourne, who have proudly displayed Greek symbols and are colloquially known as Hellas, and surely Ramazan Tavsancioglu isn't Turkish because if he was he would never want to play for South Melbourne. Makedonia's argument is quite obviously flawed and I think many people would appreciate it if such a short-sighted and simplistic argumentative approach were not used again. If you want to prove that Lazaridis isn't Greek, you better find some concrete proof rather than drawing uninformed conclusions. Greekfire 10:18, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
Proposal to settle the dispute
[edit]I have proposed to user Makedonia and he has accepted [4], to completely remove any references in the article about Stan Lazaridis being Greek or Slav Macedonian and just state that he is Australian. If there is enough consensus we can stick with that, until firm proof is found regarding his ancestry. I remind everyone that Stan himself does not wish to be involved in any dispute between the two communities. Please state below if you agree or not with this proposal.-- Avg 00:40, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
- Agree (per my proposal)-- Avg 00:40, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
- Agree He is Greek. But I think we've all got better things to do:)--Greasysteve13 05:43, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
- Disagree (and comment) --Mallaccaos, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
- Disagree Per Mallaccaos' comments--BONK 15 June 2006
- Ok, I don't understand this. The guy is a Pontic Greek; he is asked specifically this question: "You're from a Greek background, did you ever consider playing for their national side instead?" and replys: "Yeah, the opportunity did arise but I was born Australian and wanted to go with them really. I respect the heritage and that, but it'd be hard to live your life in Australia and play for another team."[5]; he appears in the book The Greeks in Australia (p.102) about his Greek heritage by Anastasios Tamis; why would he appear in a book about Greek-Australians if he isn't or doesn't even feel Greek?[6]...and he can't be labeled as a Greek Australian...'why??...even though he himself call's himself one. Oh and Lazaridis, who has Greek heritage, said he was really excited about meeting the Euro 2004 champion Greece. Oh and for those who believe that he must be of 'Makedonce' descent since he played for the Stirling Lions and based only on this generic picture[7], then you must also believe that Bobby Despotovski must be 'Greek' since he played for Floreat Athena and based on this picture[8]. And another thing, yes he would have played for the Stirling Lions if he was lent out to them as Troy Halpin was. Or are we now going to be told that Aaron McKee, David Murphy and Paul Dickson are 'Makedonce' too, since they are playing for SL. Nor do I believe any random emails that some person posts on the internet. Regards. ;) ~Mallaccaos, 8 June 2006
Greek club
[edit]Lazaridis is considering playing for a Greek or Cypriot club.[9] [10] ~Mallaccaos, 8 June 2006
- Never mind his going home to play for Perth. ~Mallaccaos, 8 June 2006
Mike Lazaridis (the founder and co-CEO of Research In Motion (RIM)) is identified here as being of Greek decent.--58.104.33.65 06:16, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
- That's some descent information. Slumgum T. C. 23:45, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
How is it?? That's not even his brother they look nothing alike. Are you guys loony?? -Sorry not logged in (Nath).
Ok,
1. Stan is an Australian born football player. 2. His parents were born in Macedonia, Greece. This means for those who pretend not to understand, the part (75%) of the Macedonia region which belongs to the Greeks and not Slavs. 3. His grandparents have a Pontic descent (Lazaridis is a common Pontic surname), which means that they came from the greek populations of Pontus, Black Sea. 4. Stan speaks greek and english fluently and has double nationality. 5. As I have seen him playing for Birmingham i can tell you that he is - or maybe used to be - one of the best players in Premierleague during the first years of this decade.
Cheers
Perth Glory isn't a Skopjan Club
[edit]and Lazaridis is certainly a name which implies Pontic-Greek descent.
- What about "Kirou", "Petropoulos" and "Raikos"? I personally know these families and they all have a clear Macedonian identity, despite their Hellenic names. Everyone knows of Greece's Hellenization of ethnic minorities. --AimLook 12:06, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Petropoulos and Kirou are two of the most common Greek surnames as Lazaridis is one of the most common Pontic-Greek surnames.I am a Pontic Greek i live in Greece i know you don't simple as that.155.207.250.243 20:02, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
- You've proven my point! Those are not Macedonian names, yet the families I know that hold those names have a clear ethnic Macedonian identity. --AimLook 05:41, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
