My name is Robert Stoneman I am 67 years of age,the original story of st sidwell always intrigued me as I have now got older an take interest into local history alas perhaps to late in time now2017 January 16th approximately.

I need to have my story logged somewhere my instinct tells me in all honesty of my youth as apprentice carpenter working for then local builder in the city of Exeter now passed on my master of teaching me the skills of carpentry and joinery of which I am fully indentured city and guilds craftsman .

My story I feel must be told to at the very least I feel important to St Sidwell church and to local history historians I have tried to get more proof to substantiate my belief it is very important to me,

Write let's go back in time approx 1970 year the builder I worked for J.LOCK and Sons a good honest builder with his father business and one other son,at that time in building it still had highs and lows of busy times and low points when at that time of slow carpentry work I was instructed by my boss to assist in labouring duties to speed up new build the location then King William house 6 flats2 story high the location called then church lane but now King William street the site then was high with soil rubbish and overgrown weeds to the left of St Sidwell church a old bomb site rubble from W.w.2 etc then as a youth of the sixtys about 20 years old I did not know than at that time or even showed any interest but rember one day moving wheelbarrows of soil and rubbish to lorry for transport to landfill,the digger driver stopped suddenly to warn the Lock brothers of a hole that had just caved in and appeared it was covered by some sort of brick arch over a well they were standing close taking site measurements and depth of clearance from original road level some 10 feet deeper than normal the lower depth for underground car parking and storage cupboard,

In the ensuing excitement of discovery the excavation was temporary stopped,the 2 brothers where in deep conservation of what had happened with the digger driver,l with 2 others were instructed to keep working clearing site to fill lorrys on another part of site in the afternoon a lorry turned up on site with 2inch stone infill it was tipped down well on disscusion with a bricklayer I was told they had decided to fill well so as not to hold up building work of flats as the well was outside ofplan building line and would not interfere with foundation dig of flats then the site was completed no problems.moving on from then continued as carpenter and joiner till about5 years ago a keen amateur of some local history ,after reading books of st Sidwell history I strongly wonder if this at the very least a continuation of cathedral wells aguaducts threw streams or maybe the original well being close to church the 2 nd being blown up in ww2,

I have put my theory to Mr Mark Stoyle by E/ mail but he could not help,also asked local historian Hazel Harvey she could not help,but my strong feeling is there is something connected here to local history so I want this recorded for historical records until proven my thoughts are incorrect,
