Comment
[edit]I think it should be kept up because there is nothing about the saint anywhere else. I do not kow where to put this information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Scratchy Pig (talk • contribs) 19:14, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
Date of St Machan
[edit]The article dates St Machan to the 12th century. Is there any evidence to support this?
W F H Nicolaisen, Scottish Place Names, p 172 of 1976 edition, takes the view that the first element in Ecclesmachan is Cumbric rather than Gaelic, which suggests a date earlier than the 12th century for the village name, and, by inference, a date earlier than the 12th century for the saint himself.
St Machan is conventionally dated to the late 6th century. See eg http://www.saintpaulsmilton.org.uk/saintdominics/histories_st_machans.htm. The guide to the Church of St Machan, at Ecclesmachan in West Lothian, also gives the 6th century.
