Heritage status of old St Augustine's Church
[edit]Although proposed in 1991, the old St Augustine's Church and presbytery are not listed in the South Australian Heritage Places Database. In contrast, St John's Anglican Church is listed, although its construction was only a year earlier than construction began on St Augustine's, and St John's seems to be a less impressive building (based on description). St Augustine's is listed by the Australian Government Department of Environment and Energy as an "indicative place," which means that it had been entered into the Register of the National Estate, but a formal nomination had not been made and they did not have sufficient details for an assessment. Salisbury Catholic Parish SA → ? – The abbreviation SA will not be obvious to non-Australians, and an alternative is to move to a namespace that focuses the article on the notable heritage building. There are a number of possible names based on WP:CRITERIA:
- Recognizability – Salisbury Catholic Parish, or Old St Augustine's Catholic Church as the name people familiar with the building use to differentiate it from the newer building nearby.
- Naturalness – Salisbury Catholic Parish, South Australia as suggested by Peterkingiron, or Old St Augustine's Catholic Church (Salisbury, South Australia) modeled after the other churches listed at St. Augustine Catholic Church.
- Precision – Salisbury Roman Catholic Parish, South Australia, or St Augustine's Catholic Church and Cemetery (Salisbury, South Australia) modeled after articles listed at St. Augustine Catholic Church and Cemetery and the listing in the heritage registry.
- Conciseness – Salisbury Catholic Parish is enough because there is no existing article at that namespace, or St. Augustine's Catholic Church, Salisbury.
- Consistency – Salisbury Roman Catholic Parish modeled after other article names such as Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide, or St Augustine's Catholic Church (Salisbury, South Australia) modeled after the other churches listed at St. Augustine Catholic Church.
I prefer Old St Augustine's Catholic Church because I consider the building the notable topic in the article, this seems to be a name used by people familiar with the building, it is not too long, and I prefer to avoid disambiguators when possible. It could be listed at St. Augustine Catholic Church and Cemetery and St. Augustine Catholic Church to help people find the article about the historic building, and there could be a redirect from the existing namespace for people interested in the parish. – Jack N. - Comment -- My complaint was that SA is an obscure abbreviation to non-Australians. Salisbury RC Parish will not do, because that might be in England. Equally St. Augustine Catholic Church and variations will not do as there are lots of St Augustine churches: a disambiguator is needed. I would recommend Salisbury Roman Catholic Parish, South Australia, but the decision needs to that of Australians. Peterkingiron (talk) 21:36, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
- Salisbury Catholic Parish, South Australia might be better than Salisbury Roman Catholic Parish, South Australia. I searched online, and "Salisbury Catholic Parish" got over 600 hits, the only hits for "Salisbury Roman Catholic Parish" were from this discussion. Jack N. Stock (talk) 23:42, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
- Move to St Augustine's Catholic Church, Salisbury. The church appears to be the main feature here, given it's heritage-listed. -- Necrothesp (talk) 16:00, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
- My issue with that is that there is a newer building called St Augustine's Catholic Church nearby. Of course, the newer building would naturally stay as a mention, so that would work out. The only issue is if people look for the WP:COMMONNAME or the name on the heritage listing. Old is a natural disambiguator. Jack N. Stock (talk) 14:48, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- The article can always be about both churches. "Old" isn't really much of a natural disambiguator. There are plenty of Old St Augustine's Churches around. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:07, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- You're right. For example St. Augustine Church (Philadelphia) is "also called Olde St. Augustine's" (quoting the article). I'm sure people will find the article at St Augustine's Catholic Church, Salisbury. If someone creates a duplicate page titled something like "Old St Augustine's Church" then we can change it into a disambiguation page. I also don't think anybody is going to confuse it with Salisbury, England. Jack N. Stock (talk) 17:05, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
