Purpose of lock

[edit]

In a discussion of the locks yesterday with the lock master, he says the actual purpose isn't so much to regulate levels as it is to regulate current. The difference in the elevations between the lake and the sea would produce strong rapids and that is what the locks are to prevent. He says there was an incident a few years ago when one of the locks did not fully close. When the other lock opened, such a current flowed that it actually damaged the locks. Such conversations are not sources but perhaps there is a source somewhere to sort this out. --KenWalker | Talk 16:50, 10 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
