Clarification needed re: Larry Matysik
[edit]The introduction to the list refers to Larry Matysik as "former owner and promoter of the St. Louis Wrestling Club". Matysik has done scores of hours of very detailed shoot interviews regarding his role with the promotion and St. Louis wrestling in general. If you desire to discount that, then look at the Slam Wrestling piece which describes him merely as "a promotion owner" and not explicitly as the owner or promoter of SLWC. Obviously, a conflict exists with may very well constitute a WP:SYNTH violation. According to Matysik's own accounts and contemporary information published by Dave Meltzer and others, when Sam Muchnick retired at the beginning of 1982, he became the promotion's general manager. Bob Geigel and his partners (presumably Pat O'Connor and Harley Race, though that may have changed over time) actually owned the promotion. The practice in territorial days in general was to "keep it in the family" with respect to who held ownership in a promotion, especially following the Ann Gunkel situation in Georgia a decade or so before, so it's quite possible that Matysik wasn't even considered as an owner even if he had the means to buy in. At some point in 1982, Matysik quit as the SLWC's GM, dismayed over Geigel's loose financial practices compared to Muchnick's, plus Geigel's practice of using his boys from the Kansas City territory (Bob Brown, Rufus Jones, etc. etc.) when St. Louis fans were used to higher-quality talent. He was persuaded to come back before they split for good somewhere around the middle of 1983. He then founded his own "outlaw" promotion which lasted only a few months. It's quite possible that this outlaw promotion outdrew SLWC shows at one point, though something tells me that you won't find that information by relying upon the same old sources. Basically, Matysik's promotion relied heavily upon his personal friendship with Bruiser Brody, who had established himself as the biggest star in St. Louis by virtue of an hour broadway with Ric Flair, which was the main event of the Checkerdome card on February 11. He was also helped by affiliating with Angelo Poffo's ICW, which had promoted shows in southern Illinois and southern Missouri for years but was on its last legs by that point. Having Brody and Randy Savage allowed the promotion to thrive briefly, but Matysik couldn't maintain that momentum when both had to move on to other things. Brody's relationship with Baba-san and Fritz Von Erich could very well have placed him in a tenuous situation as far as NWA politics go, meaning he had to choose between one or the other if he wanted to keep working as steadily as he had. Hope this helps, though something tells me that it won't unless you look beyond the likes of Slam Wrestling for sourcing. RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 23:53, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
