Hi User:Zblace thanks for your email, I replied. On this page, I just edited out the italics on the names of the centres because I don't think they fit wikistyle. I also made it Br-Eng instead of US-Eng (center→centre) because that's how I started the page and wanted to stay consistent but happy to discuss because I'm easy with either; I'm not a Croatian native so maybe US-Eng works better? Cheers for any comments on that! Mujinga (talk) 17:20, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Mujinga both is fine. No strong preferences here. --Zblace (talk) 17:39, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Cool! Mujinga (talk) 18:40, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a bit more, see what you think! Mujinga (talk) 19:04, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

1960s statistics

[edit]

Mujinga, what you did in this edit does not make much sense. It's common knowledge that a substantial amount of private housing was not constructed with the appropriate legal backing, but that concept is not exactly the same as what is conventionally known as squatting, as most typical illegal construction in Croatia takes place on land that is owned by the person, the illegal part is instead the violation of building codes. The web archive link does not actually work for me, but when I just use Google Books, it leads me to https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/_/8d6nJVcd5NAC?hl=en&gbpv=1&pg=PA283 which seems to confirm what I just wrote - it's about new houses that are built without permits, not existing housing that is used without permit, which is the more conventional meaning of what would readers would expect under the title of "squatting in Croatia". That source does use the term squatting, but a term like that is not common in Croatian, so I'm curious about the source behind it. It seems to reference "Finci 1972", and a WorldCat search leads me to https://www.worldcat.org/title/simpozijum-bespravna-stambena-izgradnja-i-njen-odraz-na-funkcionalni-i-prostorni-razvoj-gradova-u-bosni-i-hercegovini-16-i-17-decembra-1971-godine/oclc/604553506&referer=brief_results which confirms this, as the title term bespravna stambena izgradnja means "illegal housing construction". I think we need a more careful analysis of these kinds of sources before we construct a huge 3 level deep WP:SYNTH violation in this article. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 10:51, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya my edit was intended to clarify but sadly it did not. If you can access page 283 then I refer you to the section which reads as follows:
During 1967 this institution carried out a survey of seventy-three Yugoslavian cities that showed more than 36,000 squatter dwellings had been constructed between 1961 and 1967. The proportion of illegal housing in the analyzed cities represented about one half of the total private construction (Table 13.3).
Hopefully that makes the connection between illegal housing and squatting clear. Figure 13.3 (also on page 283) is where I took the stats from. It's in a chapter called 'Squatter housing in Yugoslavia'. I don't think I'm doing much SYNTH here. Mujinga (talk) 17:29, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Like I said, you're not, but these sources may well be, because they're talking about "squatting" in a sense that is not really described by our article on squatting. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 09:06, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Joy @Mujinga - I am not super informed to do the discourse analasys here, but can imagine that these are at least related if not exactly the same and worth keeping maybe with a notice that the term is used differently in different contexts? @Veseli ruđer could you help with this? --Zblace (talk) 09:27, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, if we can find reliable sources that describe both kinds of behaviors equally as "squatting", that is fine, but I'm thinking that we really have to explain the nuance, because these seem to be fairly distinct concepts. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 11:51, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
