Hobble Creek

[edit]

The story I was told growing up in Springville is the creek was called "Hobble Creek" since some horse hobbles were found in the creek when the settlers first arrived, not becuase it was a common practice to have horses run off after leaving their hobbles in the creek. I'll leave it for now, but a citation is needed here.

I had heard that too, but I also don't know of a hard reference for it. Kingsfold (talk) 18:39, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
John Van Cott's Utah Place Names is more specific; it refers to a particular event in 1849 when Barney Ward and Oliver B. Huntington had to chase down their horses who had broken free from their hobbles. But that book does include some name stories that are definitely apocryphal, so I don't know.
