What kind of mask?

This article says that he wears a pitcher's mask, but I've never heard of that. Baseball pitchers don't wear masks and I don't know of any other pitchers in sports. Is it a mistake? What sort of mask does he wear? If it's really a pitcher's mask, then what is a pitcher's mask?
