Good Article review progress box
Criteria: 1a. prose () 1b. MoS () 2a. ref layout () 2b. cites WP:RS () 2c. no WP:OR () 2d. no WP:CV ()
3a. broadness () 3b. focus () 4. neutral () 5. stable () 6a. free or tagged images () 6b. pics relevant ()
Note: this represents where the article stands relative to the Good Article criteria. Criteria marked are unassessed
  • Quite a short article, but it seems to cover nearly all available sources on the subject (a few more mentioned below)
  • Noted.
  • Done.
  • Lead: an admired[1] 1983 book sounds a bit POV to me. Suggest relocating the adjective to the end of the sentence and providing context. (E.g. this article says: "Her books Splintered Light [...] have become part of the canon of Tolkien scholarship, providing the groundwork and inspiration for future generations of Tolkien scholars.")
  • Done.
  • Related to the previous point, it would be helpful to add more context on Flieger. (E.g. rather than just describe her as a Tolkien scholar, this article says "For over three decades, Verlyn Flieger has been one of the world's leading Tolkien scholars". It also sounds like this book marked the beginning of her career.)
  • Good idea. Added a context section on Flieger.
  • Eden says in page 114 that the book was "the first full-length monograph on the Silmarillion", which is worth mentioning. Also, the existing cite could use a shorter page range.
  • Added, and done.
  • Add critiques mentioned in Attebery's review ("She is less successful in tying his creations to biography", which he expands on.)
  • Done.
  • Ralph C. Wood, reviewing the book for VII – his review is actually of a different book of Flieger's, which he compares to this one.
  • Reworded.
  • Gloss Owen Barfield, Brian Attebery and Janice Neuleib
  • Done.
  • Is the image (and the label) entirely sourceable to Flieger? If not, citations to pages of the Silmarillion would be useful.
  • Yes, she covers that in detail.
  • May be worth adding an external link to ISFDB, which would make a TOC appear (and make the article seem less short).
  • Done.

That's all I have; placing it  on hold. Please ping if you have any questions/once done. Thanks. Olivaw-Daneel (talk) 02:18, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Olivaw-Daneel - all done. Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:40, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Great. One last point before I pass it: could ref #2 be cited somewhere in the body (it's only in the lead)?
Done. Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:15, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
