Notability

[edit]

@Dough4872: what significant coverage of this topic in reliable secondary sources which contribute to notability are you seeing? Horse Eye's Back (talk) 16:06, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Of the many millions of miles of roadways in the United States, only a tiny percentage are designated as state highways, let alone as United States Numbered Highways as these are. Thus, the fact that AASHTO and the state departments of transportation have set these aside from the rest of the roadways in the country for classification is an indication of noteworthiness for them. So while it may not satisfy traditional notions of notability, as Wikipedia uses that term of art, I would state that these highways are still worth noting apart from other roadways, thus are notable in another sense of that word.
Per WP:SIZE, this content can't be just be merged away into a parent article, nor should it be to have complete coverage of the United States Numbered Highway System. Stand-alone articles on each of these would be overkill, so this listicle is the best compromise location for the content. In short, I oppose any attempt at merging or deleting this amount of content. Quibble about specific sources, but existence should be verifiable to the archive of AASHTO's U.S. Route Numbering Subcommittee that is tasked with approving these designations, and existence should also be verifiable to maps, current or historical, from state DOTs or third-parties like Rand McNally.
