English translation
[edit]Can somebody translate the annotations on the first page please. In particular, what do the × and ÷ symbols mean? MarkMLl (talk) 13:19, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
- Done
2. Name mit Zeichen ÷ = Festnahme für Geheimes Staats polizeiamt, Abteilung IV * / III J, zu Nr. 3454.
3. Name mit Zeichen X = Festnahme für Geheimes Staats polizeiamt, Abteilung IV * / II, zu Nr. 03151 / 39 g - II A 4.2. Name with characters ÷ = arrest for State Secret Police Office, Department IV / III J to no. 3454th
3. Name of character X = arrest for State Secret Police Office, Department IV / II, to No. 03151/39 g. - A 4 II.* What is not spelled out in the translation is the Gestapo, which became known as RSHA Amt IV (a.k.a. Abteilung IV, or the Department or Office IV). References can be found in our own Gestapo article. Poeticbent talk 14:35, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
- The Google translation contains a number of problems. I am offering here my corrected version, as a bilingual speaker.
2. Name mit Zeichen ÷ = Festnahme für Geheimes Staatspolizeiamt, Abteilung IV * / III J, zu Nr. 3454.
3. Name mit Zeichen X = Festnahme für Geheimes Staatspolizeiamt, Abteilung IV * / II, zu Nr. 03151 / 39 g - II A 4.2. Names with character ÷ = arrest for Secret National-police Headquarters, Department IV / III J to no. 3454th
3. Names with character X = arrest for Secret National-police Headquarters, Department IV / II, to No. 03151/39 g. - A 4 II.As you can see, Google translate is ignorant of plural and singular usage in German/English. ("The teacher tells the pupils to raise their hands" but in German the singular for hand is used: Der Lehrer fordert die Schueler auf, die Hand zu heben. Furthermore Google has failed to notice that Zeichen is singular in this context. And finally, I am not aware of the expression "Police office" in English. There are police stations and police headquarters, I have opted here for headquarters given the context, but perhaps there is a more appropriate word such as police department - this choice requires a knowledge of police administration which I do not have. The difference betwen "State" and "National" is less grave, I think on balance in English it would be more usual to speak of national police rather than state police, as "state" can sound ominous. 2A00:23C6:54D3:DA01:28D8:7373:D729:1ABF (talk) 10:05, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
Crimes against humanity category removal
[edit]Crimes against humanity is a specific legal concept. In order to be included in the category, the event (s) must have been prosecuted as a crime against humanity, or at a bare minimum be described as such by most reliable sources. Most of the articles that were formerly in this category did not mention crimes against humanity at all, and the inclusion of the category was purely original research.
