Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario
[edit]I've compiled a list at Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario but have one annoying gap in respects to the 12th parliament:
- Thomas Crawford, Con., (1910-1911)
- Thomas Crawford, Con., (1907-1908)
Crawford was Speker in the 11th parliament which ended in 1908. He is also listed as Speaker for the second half of the 12th parliament but I can find no listing for a speaker for the first part of the 12th parliament (1909-1910). Was there a speaker between Crawford's two terms? Did the legislature just not meet for two years (unlikely since I can find references to committee memberships for 1909). Is there just a typo in the online record for Crawford (ie was he really speker for the whole parliament; he's not listed as having any other duties?)
Does anyone have access to the Ontario Hansard for the period?Homey 17:59, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
This is Crawford's entry from the legislative website: http://olaap.ontla.on.ca/mpp/daMbr.do?whr=Id%3D1037&locale=en Parliament 12 June 08, 1908 — November 13, 1911
Riding : * Toronto West -- Seat A
Parliamentary Roles : * Speaker January 25, 1910 — March 24, 1911
Looking at other listings for MLAs it seems that the 12th parliament did not convene until January or February 1909 (committee appointments date from February 23 suggesting the legislature first met at or just before then). Given that Crawford isn't listed as having any duties in 1909 it's quite possible there's a typo and his speakership from that session really began January 25, 1909. Alternatively, he may have been ill for the first year of the session and not had any duties. Anyway, we can't know unless someone can find the Ontario Hansard for 1909. I don't have ready access to a university library right now, does anyone else?Homey 18:06, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
I'll research this tomorrow (Stauffer Library being closed on Sundays during the summer). CJCurrie 18:30, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
