Contradictions in the sources
[edit]Greene & Massignani don't say anything about a second attempt to breakout from Cartagena, only that Lobo and his ships had to re-coal at Gibraltar after the battle. Wilson, in Vol. I of Battleships in Action, matches O'Shea's account of another breakout attempt, but I have the feeling that he used O'Shea as a source. Wilson does say that Numancia and Mendez Nunez bombarded Alicante on 6 October, but that's not mentioned by anyone else. These sorts of contradictions are why I've never really worked these ships and this battle. I'd really like to see some Spanish accounts of all this.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 14:50, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
