Why is there a pic of EVE online in this article? EVE online is not a space flight simulator. Sybaronde (talk) 16:27, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A complicated merge proposal

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was to merge the space simulator and space flight simulator articles. Video game information will be split out and covered in its own new article: space flight simulator game. Randomran (talk) 23:36, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This merger proposal has been on the shelf for a while, but nobody has really talked about it. So I'm going to try to make some headway very soon.

The two articles space flight simulator and space simulator have a lot of overlapping information with no clear distinction. You end up reading a lot of the same things, and it's unclear whre one article's scope stops and the other article's scope begins. In practice, these articles need a lot of work. I'm not sure what the ideal articles would look like. But as far as games go, space simulation games are all space flight games. On the other hand, a lot of the academic/research oriented space simulations are not about flight at all. So here's what I would propose:

Really, the goal is to sort the information, even if I'm talking about merging/splitting. I don't think most people looking for stuff about NASA are also looking for stuff about Wing Commander. Please check in with your thoughts. Randomran (talk) 16:14, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Go for it; redirect and merge Space flight simulator to Space simulator; all it needs is a sub-section overviewing the flight sims. It looks like Space trading and combat simulator could do with merging into Space combat simulator as well. Marasmusine (talk) 17:47, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've started on the latter; feel free to splice in the video game stuff from your merger. Marasmusine (talk) 17:57, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think space simulator should be used as a disambig page; in a more general sense of physics the phrase could refer to the simulation of anything in space, such as planetary orbits, or even that insipid screen saver with the stars flying by. The academic article should be called space flight simulator; it's an accurate and academic title for the subject. The game genre is most commonly known as "space sim", and we could get away with using that as a title. In the worst case though, I would use space simulator (video game genre). I don't like the idea of inserting the word "flight" because, while more accurate, that's not the common name in this context and feels like we are inventing a phrase. I say go for it. The genre articles are growing to ridiculous proportions. Just last week we had to delete "Cartoon Shooter" or something like that. What's next? "Bear and bird action platformers with shiny golden puzzle thingys"? .:Alex:. 15:18, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I completed the merge based on the discussion. All the academic information is at space simulator, and all the video game information is now at space flight simulator game. Randomran (talk) 23:36, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Errr... do you really think three responses warrants an archival template? SharkD (talk) 06:08, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
