Wrong date for The OutWorlds?
[edit]It was certainly not published in 1981. I have a product list for FGU from about 1983. It lists all SO books published through 1985, but does not list item 7160 The OutWorlds (nor 7173, published about 1988). I don't have a copy so can't check the title page, but that in itself is telling. I purchased every SO book published through 1984 and don't have this one. I'm going to change the date to 1986 (at this point a best guess). Please correct if you have more definite info. -- Dmforcier (talk) 22:26, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
- Never mind. FGU's web site lists the publication date as 1981. I'm not yet convinced this is correct, but won't change the article until I can get proof one way or the other. -- Dmforcier (talk) 22:32, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
- I have a copy of The OutWorlds here and it says "Copyright 1981 by Stefan Jones" and "Illustrations are copyright 1981 by Jeff Dee". -- Cptbutton (talk) 06:04, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

[edit]The original concept was to create a game that would not need the usual innumerable supplements to its rules but that would be a complete science fiction role playing game. Thus, we wanted a game that would allow players to role play all of the most popular roles for a character in the entire genre of science fiction literature. This called for a game to handle the future warrior and mercenary, the free-trader, the asteroid miner, the planetary explorer and first contact man, and the member of the diplomatic corps/spy service. We needed science and the possibility of scientist characters with medicine playing a major role.
As if this weren't enough, the decision was made to base the game on the grand tradition of Space Opera, in the vein of E.E Doc Smith and most recently Star Wars from George Lucas. This meant that we would also have to allow for the psionic powers so prevalent in the Lensmand series ad in Star Wars with 'the force.'
