Cleanup

This article needs:

  • A more encyclopedic tone
  • Proper formatting (remove use of all caps)
  • Proper references (i.e. book references) and citations

You can say that again. Sardaka (talk) 09:18, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Notes

[edit]
  • Added word तेजो (meaning light) missing in the Isha Upanishad verse listed in the History section. The English translation below the Sanskrit verse is incomplete without initial word तेजो (tejo/tejas).

ONCE AND FOR ALL: THE CORRECT JAPA TECHNIQUE

[edit]

Once and for all, to whoever is deleting my editing in this matter — the correct japa of hamsa (or so'ham) mantra is: "ham" with the inhalation and "sa" (or "so") with the exhalation.

You may check the authorized and reliable work of Swami Muktananda, I Am That: The Science of Hamsa from the Vijnana Bhairava (Siddha Yoga Publications, 1992) and the Vijnana Bhairava itself, verse 24.

If you have a more reliable source for the reversal of syllables ("sa" or "so" with inbreath and "ham" with outbreath) please quote it.Orlando F (talk) 20:09, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Although the original "so" on inhalation and "ham" on exhalation that you have overwritten a number of times, was not supported by citations, it is verifiably inaccurate of you to claim - in all good faith, I think - that '"ham" with the inhalation and "sa" (or "so") with the exhalation"' is "the correct japa". I can understand, if you got frustrated over seeing your edit reversed to the original without citations of references, but using majuscules is not Good practise and adding finality ("once and for all") to your POV does not make it true. I will try to find time to add greater balance to the article. MarB4 (talk) 13:53, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology

[edit]

''{{IAST|so 'ham}}'' is the same as the mantra ''hamsa'' <ref>''Ham'' with the inhalation and ''sa'' with the exhalation.</ref> ("I Am That").

While the relation between soham and hamsa is relevant, the inclusion of a reference to a note on practice rather than a source is less obvious. I suggest the reference be removed and included with source citation under a separate appropriate heading. MarB4 (talk) 15:36, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
