Title
[edit]Far as I can see, nobody but Wikipedia calls it "Society for the Establishment of...". Everyone calls it "Society for Establishing...". I figure we're wrong and the others are right. Jim.henderson (talk) 23:38, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
- Yes according to [1] and others. I intend to move it in the next few days if nobody else does. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:14, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
- I've no issues with the move as it seems the more current name, but the name "Society for the Establishment of Useful Manufactures" was not an invention of Wikipedia. [2] [3] [4] [5] and many more older ≠ wiser 19:34, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
- Ah. I trusted my 1943 Britannica's Paterson article, apparently written in the 1920s, giving "for establishing". Had I looked further, I would have called it an open question, mentioned both in the first sentence, and otherwise let a sleeping dog lie. Too bad we have no copy of the original legislation. S.U.M or S.E.U.M ?
[edit]Ron Chernow's biography of Hamilton only mentions and uses the "S.E.U.M" accronym, and never "S.U.M". I'd suppose it's a trustable source and that this page should at least mention both acronyms ? Farialima (talk) 10:03, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
