Selection section

I changed the name of the last section (Selection) but I'm still very unhappy with this section as a whole. I would delete it altogeter - it is not citing any source and is not giving any usefull information. Everyone must know that selection is different from one province to the other... I agree, and I deleted the mention of two particular brands for now. While it is true that every market has its own preferences, I think something interesting and relevant could be said here. For example, one could mention the domination of French wines, which has a larger selection than that of any other region at the SAQ. Compare that to the LCBO which carries a more even selection of American, French, Italian, Australian and Canadian wines. In matters of food and alcohol imports, Quebec has strong ties with France, which other provinces and US states do not share. So it would be nice if someone with actual knowledge of the subject could rewrite this section.--Boffob (talk) 20:34, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Alcohol consumption in Quebec

"In its 2005 annual report[2], the Corporation confirms 66.3% of sales were table wines."

I am 99% sure that beer is way above wine in Quebec. While the link to the report is broken, the report currently available online (March 2007 to March 2008) shows there is no mention of the dépanneurs, so "66.3% of sales being table wines" is probably 66.3% of what is being sold through the SAQ stores and grocery stores alone. -- Mathieugp (talk) 13:46, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Oups... I should have read further. It actually says "Note that beer does not appear within this data as most beer sales are outside the SAQ's monopoly." at the end of the paragraph. Maybe it should be clarified nonetheless, as others too might get the wrong impression from the first sentence of the section on alcohol consumption in Quebec. -- Mathieugp (talk) 13:48, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Rationale

Can anyone provide a rationale here for the continued existence of SAQ? Because their liquor prices are on average 100 to 300 percent higher than anywhere in the US and their restrictive and bizarre import policies make it impossible to find many popular spirits throughout Québec - finding import liquor is like an unfun treasure hunt that usually requires ordering ahead and/or driving across town to settle for one bottle that's well past its expiration date. I hear complaints about the monopoly more often than not.

I am certain their legitimacy to a state monopoly has been challenged, but can find no information on challenge outcomes and/or the names of any organization or group who advocates for their dissolution. If anyone is familiar, please add to this article. Lexlex (talk) 19:01, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
