Unilateral name change
[edit]The association never held the name of Sons of Liberty Society. This name was never used at the time, nor was it ever used after at any point in time. The only proper name is the original French name, which is known to English speakers. The naming convention does not state that all foreign names should be translated to English under all circumstances.
The naming convention on the use of English words states:
"Convention: Title your pages using the English name, if one exists, and give the native spelling on the first line of the article. If the native spelling is not in the Latin alphabet, also provide a Latin transliteration. Only use the native spelling as an article title if it is more commonly used in English than the anglicized form."
No English name existed for this organization and the French name is more commonly used in English than the anglicized form.
The naming convention on the names of organizations also states:
2.23 Organizations (such as political parties)
"Convention: For articles on organizations (like political parties) the general rule applies. That means: Name your pages with the English translation and place the original native name on the first line of the article unless the native form is more commonly used in English than the English form. Examples of the last are names of organizations in India, Ireland, Israel, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Quebec, Sri Lanka (English is or was an official language in most of these countries, which led to the general use of the native name) as well as some in Spain (Batasuna), Indonesia (Golkar), Iran (Mujahedden al-Khalq), Russia (Yabloko and Rodina), Republic of China (Taiwan) (Kuo Min Tang) and Cambodia (Khmer Rouge)."
This is exactly the case here. The article should be moved to its original name.

In addition to all this, the English title would only result in confusing people who search for the American Sons of Liberty. The distinction made by the use of the original French name is even more necessary because of that.

Since there is no opposition, I made the change. It was also necessary to replace other mentions of the Society for the sons of liberty to the french name since the whole argument was that the french name was more commonly used. BobbyJTHais 17:19, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
