Questions
[edit]- why is it called Smoothrock Falls. One assumes there is a waterfall. Is it picturesque?
- there isn't any history - when/why was the town founded for example
Answers
[edit]I have no cite information immediately available (which is why this is on the Talk page and not the main one), but:
Smooth Rock was a company town founded in the early 20th century in association with the old pulp mill, which for decades was owned by Abitibi-Price. Until the 1990s, the mill was also responsible for town water and sewer services, and for electricity for the western part of the town, which was not then hooked up to the provincial grid.
There was a (small) waterfall, but it was built over when the power dam for the mill was put in and is no longer visible.
