Smolyan origin of name
[edit]The modern town of Smolyan in Bulgaria was created by the merger of three smaller towns. There is a nearby village named Smilyan. Old maps mark a settlement at this location in this predominantly Muslim region named "Ismailyan", meaning I think "Ishmael's town". Many towns and villages with Turkish or Muslim names were renamed after Bulgaria gained its independence. It seems likely to me that "Smolyan" is a corruption of "Ismailyan" and very doubtful that Smolyan was actually named after a Slavic tribe called the "Smolyani". 37.63.10.210 (talk) 08:02, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
