Adding definition
[edit]Not sure why the article contained hidden text instructing editors not to add the definition of the word. It is certainly appropriate to add the most common use of the word. The fact that the most common use of the word would not be an appropriate encyclopedia article is irrelevant to the fact that in a disambiguation page you'd want to first see the most common use, followed by all other potential uses. --96.41.32.39 (talk) 17:45, 1 May 2017 (UTC)
57 cult Smithereens in 1872? Seems dubious
[edit]Deleted one disambiguation entry that was added on 21 June 2023 without any citation or wikilink to any article or supporting evidence. The line entry was:
- "Smithereens", the group of followers of cult leader Jim Smith. 57 Smithereens were blown to smithereens by way of cannon on May 6th, 1872.
The description is poor (eg. 'The (?) group of followers of..', where just 'Followers of..' would make more sense, and mention of a cult leader Smith which makes the phrase '57 Smithereens were blown to smithereens' seem bizarre and joke-like). And the entire info seems dubious - I googled it in various ways, via Jim Smith (no results), via "57 Smithereens" (no result), via "Smithereen cult" (no result), via 6 May 1872 events (no result), and even read the entire wiki article of Blowing from a gun which describes many such events with dates and places, and found nothing to match or even similar. Also dubious are the absence of any placename or country, and the peculiar date (a cult in 1872, led by an 'Anglo-Saxon' sounding leader, with a military-style mass execution?). So I've transferred the entry to this Talk page instead, so it can be reinstated if someone does find any verifiable support for Smith's Smithereens being blown to smithereens... But I strongly suspect other researchers will find nothing too... Pete Hobbs (talk) 20:27, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
