Academic ratings
I see nothing here about academic ratings or rankings. This type of information would add value to this article. IPBiographer (talk) 10:09, 18 June 2016 (UTC)
Blatant Spin
Whoever has whitewashed this page should know that it's obvious. Really. "Skidmore college decided not to participate in the 2007 US News and World Report Rankings"
My personal favorite is the part about the "Secret Society"
Also, love how winning an Emmy makes you a notable alumnus. There is an adviser to musicals at a high school upstate with THAT particular honor.
Thanks for the laugh, maybe somebody other than a current student or an alumnus will make an edit here or there... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.156.234.134 (talk) 07:15, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
I second that. "Consequently, the grounds have a contemporary ambience that is enhanced by the numerous sculptures and murals that decorate the quads and other common areas." Contemporary ambience? Enhanced... What the hell? Is this euphemistic speech for, "The campus is, like anything else created in the 1960's, fugly"? Lequis (talk) 19:21, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
- I removed a little of the spin and tried to keep NPOV. I tried to replace hype with facts. Peter Flass (talk) 22:31, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
Jessica Alba
Someone keeps adding Ms. Alba to the "Notable Alumni" list, stating that she "attended" (i.e., did not graduate). Where's the proof of this? Crispinus211 11:49, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
She never attended Skidmore. A few years ago, the Skidmore News ran an article in an April Fools Day issue about her enrolling for the following semester. That's how that rumor got started.
Fred Savage
Didnt that guy from the Wonder Years attend as well. So did Niki Taylor. The model who droped out in '94 after getting knocked up.
Fred Savage did not, check his bio.
He GRADUATED from Stanford, but attended Skidmore in (I think) 1994/5. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.7.17.42 (talk) 17:55, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
Nope, he showed up on a tour of the campus, but never attend. I graduated in 1995. So, I remember when this occurred. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.183.15.38 (talk) 00:07, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
Notable Faculty of Skidmore
- Steven Millhauser, Literature/Writing, Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (1997).
- Regis Brodie, Ceramics
- Carolyn Forche, Poet
- Tom Lewis, Film/Writing, Winner of an Emmy Award
- Ellen Hinsey, Writing and Literature
- Beau Breslin, Government, Contemporary communitarian philosophy theorist
- Sheldon Solomon, Psychology, developed Terror Management Theory
Section keeps being deleted, because apparently not all faculty are included. This section needs to be included, and people can contribute to it.
No, it doesn't need to be included. Crispinus211 11:50, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Disagree. Take a look at other colleges. For example, Vassar, a “peer” of Skidmore http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vassar_College#Faculty. It is information which should be included and contributed to. Please tell a valid reason other than the vanity of some faculty might be hurt because they were not included on the list.
I suppose that is a consideration; but the real issue is how one measures "notability." The list above is very heavy on English. This is not, I presume, the only major at Skidmore. The list implies, though, that only faculty in that field, and precious few others, have achieved notariety in their fields. Crispinus211 17:41, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
If the list is "heavy' on English, isn't that even more of a reason to post it so people may contribute to it!
- As an outsider, I'd say that at least Regis Brodie and Carolyn Forche belong in the list. Peter Flass (talk) 22:29, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
Drugs
The drug problem needs to be mentioned. http://www.norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=5734 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Happy cow (talk • contribs)
- Phrasing it as a "problem" would probably violate the neutral point of view requirement, but other than that, be bold and make the addition. Cheers --Pak21 13:01, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
While you feel it needs to be mentioned, the context you have placed it in is not correct. The Princeton Review ranking you cite was for "Reffer Madness" not "Pot Friendly" and Skidmore's "drug problem" is no where near that of other schools, note that it was only on the list one year, and the Princeton Review is not scientific either. Also implying that it is "Pot Friendly" implies that the administration is not proactive against drug abuse.
Jeff Treuhaft
I updated Jeff Treuhaft's position at VeriSign as "senior vice president"; however, I removed the reference to his being "founder of Netscape." As the Wikipedia page on Netscape clearly states, Netscape was founded as Mosaic Comunications Corporation by Marc Andreessen and Jim Clark. There is no mention of Treuhaft as a founder. Further, a July, 2005 online Fortune article identifies Jim Clark as a Netscape "Co-Founder" and Jeff Treuhaft as "one of Netscape's first employees" (see http://www.leighbureau.com/speakers/ALashinsky/essays/netscape.pdf). If someone has some proof of Treuhaft being a Netscape founder, feel free to bring it forth. Cjkporter 21:43, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
