Tasteless and bizarre costume

Is it really POV to say that the Sixth Doctor's costume was "tasteless and bizarre"? I mean, that was more or less the producer's brief to the costume designer, wasn't it? Despite the character's assertions that the coat was the height of fashion on whatever-planet-it-was, I doubt that any human being would say it wasn't tasteless or bizarre. Some fans of the Sixth Doctor might have developed a fondness for the costume, but I'm sure that came much more from fondness for the character and/or programme than for an aesthetic judgement on the costume. —Josiah Rowe 00:01, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

It is if asserted straight like that, because it will read like the article is passing judgment on the costume rather than reporting JNT's intent. I've checked my reference books and will replace it with an attributable quote. --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 00:11, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
On the same subject, this sentence needs a citation: "Nathan-Turner later conceded the costume was a mistake and detracted from the show." There's a partial interview with him here[1] in which he says just the opposite, mentioning how well he thinks the costume holds up, twenty years later. He also discusses his reasoning behind the costume, establishing the Doctor as an alien with a different aesthetic from ours, and some of the visual inspirations (a Hawaiian shirt!). Don't know where the interview itself is from - if we can source it, maybe we could add some of his comments to the article. SixFourThree (talk) 16:08, 19 June 2008 (UTC)SixFourThree
More on the costume, the article says "In recent years, a blue variation of the costume has become a popular alternative. This outfit was initially used in the webcast Real Time as the clashing colours of the original design were tricky to animate. It also has been used in the numerous audio drama stories from Big Finish Productions." That doesn't always seem to have been the case. All of these were released after Real Time, but feature the multicolored costume. I'm going to tweak the paragraph to reflect. SixFourThree (talk) 21:18, 14 July 2008 (UTC)SixFourThree

The other actor

If the Sixth Doctor was oficially portrayed by a second actor (as the article currently states) it makes sense to mention who it was besides Baker, but I found no mention. Help anyone? Luis Dantas (talk) 13:00, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

The other actor is Sylvester McCoy, who portrayed both the role of the Sixth Doctor just prior to regeneration and obviously as himself as the Seventh Doctor. This was due to Colin's apparent unhappiness at being let go, and being poorly treated, so Sylvester had to play both roles in his opening episode. The article states "This makes the Sixth Doctor one of only two incarnations of the Doctor to have been officially played by more than one actor, the other being the First Doctor.". What is meant by 'officially'? McCoy was not given a separate credit for this brief performance, and several stunt men and body doubles (notably Brian Proudfoot, Edmund Warwick, Terry Walsh, Gareth Milne, Tip Tipping) and Colum Regan have played the Doctor as 'officially' as Sylvester's brief appearance here. Final Appearance

Anyways I do not want to change it out of fear of messing something already agreed upon before my time on the wiki.

But it seems to me that Time and the Rani is the last sixth doctor story not the trial of a time lord:the ultimate foe. So wouldn't it make sense to remove the ultimate foe from the side bar as the last appearance because its not the sixth doctors final appearance but colin bakers as the sixth doctor. And then mention within the article that it was colin bakers.

Anyways if something already has been agreed upon I apologize, I am new here. Therealluke (talk) 09:22, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

Apologies for not seeing this before. McCoy played the Doctor throughout the regeneration, but in no real sense played the Sixth Doctor. He is already regenerating as the story starts. It is misleading to say he plays the Sixth Doctor. U-Mos (talk) 17:08, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Personality

"Heart of gold?" I think several of the Doctor articles have flowery language but I'm not sure how to put things and I haven't the time myself. Also, there is some valid material in previous revisions, such as Jan 19, which could be put back in in some fashion. --Howdybob 10:38, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Anyone know enough about the development of the 6th doctor's character to put something in about it? It always struck me as such a wide departure from the last 5 doctors to have some rationale behind it. I noticed in the earlier versions of this page, there was some reference to JNT having a hand in the character development --if so, I'd love to know more about it, and to see it brought back. Incorrect re: Fixing Chameleon Circuit

I think this is incorrect: "the Sixth Doctor was the only one who was able to repair and operate the chameleon circuit within the TARDIS."

In "Journey's End," the Doctor-Donna mentioned, "You know you can fix that chameleon circuit if you..." and starts to explain before her condition prevents her from continuing. I believe this shows that the Doctor knew how to repair the circuit [after all Donna's knowledge only came from the Doctor's own mind], but he simply has chosen not to, I suspect out of a fondness for the current shape of the TARDIS. One is free to infer that she is telling something the Tenth Doctor already knows but Wikipedia cannot do that. It is OR to conclude that her knowledge is somehow limited to what he already knows with no influence from her own personal perspective, which is belied by statements in that episode: his mind augments hers, not subsumes it). In any case the Sixth Doctor repairs the Chameleon circuit whereas no previous Doctor did, and we know at least one of them was seen to have tried (that's why the Fourth Doctor went to Logopolis).ZarhanFastfire (talk) 06:37, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
