Should we have a page about Sirocco?
[edit]There is a rather long discussion on the Kakapo talk page that resulted in the creation of this great little gem of an article. Schwede66 18:38, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Wording in section: Last Chance to See incident
[edit]What does "in lieu" mean here: a Twitter account set up in lieu of the screening. In lieu means "in place of, instead of" usually. Kahuroa (talk) 09:04, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
- That doesn't make sense to me either. I assume the writer meant "after the screening", and I've changed the text accordingly. --Avenue (talk) 23:49, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
Vanished?
[edit]There have been some news stories stating Sirocco has vanished,[1] Any updates on this? FunkMonk (talk) 20:07, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
- Sirocco is still there in Maud Island and active. 203.95.222.237 (talk) 05:59, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
Requested move 23 November 2023
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: Not moved, consensus favours retaining the current title over either proposal. (non-admin closure) BegbertBiggs (talk) 13:54, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Sirocco (parrot) → Sirocco (kākāpō) – To me the current title suggests that Sirocco is a species of parrot, rather than an individual bird. —Panamitsu (talk) 00:24, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Move to Sirocco (bird). Disambiguation tags don't need to be overly specific. 162 etc. (talk) 00:57, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Support this. YorkshireExpat (talk) 11:29, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Comment: At least for me, the current title actually does suggest an individual bird, so I don't think the article needs moving. I have no preference between (parrot) and (bird) though. 3 kids in a trenchcoat (talk) 03:42, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Comment: When I look at Category:Individual parrots, I can't say that I'm overly concerned how this article is disambiguated. Schwede66 04:35, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Weak oppose Sirocco (kākāpō), strong oppose Sirocco (bird). The (bird) disambiguation is used for taxa (species, genera, families). Under Category:Individual birds, no articles use the disambiguation (bird). 7 articles on individual birds use the disambiguation (parrot). Category:Individual parrots includes those 7 as well as 4 more with a disambiguation of (cockatoo), (parakeet) or (budgerigar). Plantdrew (talk) 03:01, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose, per above discussion, the title doesn't seem to present confusion where the proposed title is much less understandable in common use of the language. Randy Kryn (talk)
- Oppose, I think that the current article name works ok. No need to move it. Snowman (talk) 17:41, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose per above, the current title is preferred, and likely more familliar to readers. Seems no good alternative disambiguator has been provided that is not used for taxa. DankJae 02:23, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose. I don't understand how the current title would suggest that Sirocco was the name of a species – it is not a binominal name and it is not the kind of name that I would readily imagine was the common name of a species. There is no need to move the article. I am not dead against Sirocco (kākāpō), and if it was already called that I would probably again say to leave it as that. I agree with '162 etc.' that disambiguators don't need to be overly specific, but nor do they need to be overly general, and I'm opposed to moving to Sirocco (bird). Just leave as is.
