Expanding Stub 18 March

Google News alerts brought me here. I am a volunteer for Bishop Baez who assists with English translations. I also have assisted with the editing of his BLP on Spanish Wikipedia. I am not an experienced editor, but have access to unpublished information that can contribute to the expansion of the stub. I was part of a small team that recreated the bishop's Spanish BLP after extensive vandalism; we still have our template. I'm happy to assist here in any way possible. I mentioned on your talk page, but just to reiterate for anyone reading along here: because of en-Wikipedia policies on conflict of interest, the best thing to do since you have a personal relationship to the subject is to make suggestions here on the talk page and then other uninvolved editors can help assess and add them. This is for the sake of ensuring the neutrality of the encyclopedia.

The other thing to know about en-WP is that unpublished material is not allowed. This is explained under the policy of verifiability--in short, that a reader should not have to just trust that information added was accurate, but instead can go and check anything for themselves and see it was published in a reliable sources. But I'm sure you can help a lot on this front too; if you're seeing the press published about Baez, it'd be great to have the links so we can add information with a citation to the source verifying it. For this purpose, it's probably worth reading the en-WP policy reliable sources.

Social media

Just to get started on one issue as we develop this page--Dvora072096, per the policy Beestra linked to, generally the en-wiki policy is that only one official personal site is allowed, and in absence of such a site, one social media page is permitted. Bishop Silvio Jose Baez gained fame and notoriety in June 2013 when he confronted authorities during similar protests and stepped in as a mediator. Those actions propelled him into the sphere of social media. He began to communicate via a Facebook page and a Twitter profile, but Twitter became his primary platform. He cross-posts to Facebook, but also publishes unique content there that cannot fit within the confines of Twitter. He publishes audio of his weekly homilies to his YouTube channel, along with occasional inspirational video messages. In July 2018 he began collaborating daily with an English translator on Twitter. I apologize that I misread the link to the social media policy. I know that English language researchers are looking for quality content. I have the content. If you can help me to code this I can translate the content of this information for the right-hand column thingy for the BLP. This is the copy/paste template from his Spanish bio.

Thanks and, I hear where you're coming from. There are definitely folks who agree with you and feel the policy is archaic. If you want to propose a change, you can raise the issue at Wikipedia_talk:External_links, although I would suggest first using the search bar on that page to look through the archives at previous conversations about including social media. One objection is that en-Wikipedia, as a tertiary source, aims to avoid promoting any specific figures and instead only wants to give readers a summary of what independent, reliable secondary sources have said about that figure. Including lots of social media links start to look like it's serving as advertising for that person, and meanwhile does not add to the en-WP mission of describing the findings of reliable secondary sources, because those pages are primary sources (and of course, not independent of the subject of the entry). I agree with you that those pages would definitely be of interest to researchers; however en-Wikipedia is not meant for original research. Rather it seeks to be an overview of existing knowledge. I hope that's helpful--I know many en-WP policies are often different from other language Wikipedias, and not always in intuitive ways. Innisfree987 (talk) 18:53, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

Dvora072096, great, thank you! So, we would definitely want to describe all of that social media activity in the extent to which there are secondary sources that discuss it. So if you have press links describing it, that would be great.
For the infobox (the right hand column of key details): unfortunately I'm not aware of a way to copy the infobox directly from es-wiki because each language's Wikipedia has its own templates, but I will start the English version and then if you want to fill it in, that would be great. The only requirement is that every piece of information added needs to have a reliable source verifying it, as I describe above. So it may make sense to develop the body of the entry first, by suggesting details to add and their sources here on the talk page, and then expand the infobox once things have been incorporated and cited properly.

Innisfree987 I may not know how to code, but I'm always willing to copy code and try to change the details. I will search for press links that mention and/or describe the Facebook and YouTube accounts, but they may not be in English. Must they be English sources only? Because, the English biographic profiles and press links barely exist yet. In Spanish, these sources are common knowledge. Innisfree987 I am working on editing the infobox details in my personal sandbox (finally figured out where it is and how to use it), using Robert Barron (bishop) as an example of another Auxiliary Bishop with a well-known media presence. His infobox differs significantly in structure than the Baez infobox in Spanish, but I'll be happy to work within en-wiki parameters. I think if you need advice on something that needs to be handled confidentially, the best thing to do would be to email them. @Dvora072096: regarding the external links, our guidelines are rather strict as to what should be included there (and as Innisfree987 mentions, that is the standing consensus which is, even if it is archaic, still upheld in many current discussions). For official websites of the subject, we list 'only one', the one that is generally regarded as their main outlet. And as a matter of en-Wikipedia policy, all languages are equally valid sources: the key thing is that they be secondary sources that have a good editorial track record with fact-checking (so, if someone has a personal blog, even if you know it's reliable, it generally does not qualify for use on en-WP because it is original research, without a second layer of fact-checking. The main exception is that basic biographical details Báez offers about himself--say, on Twitter--are considered acceptable within certain rules--you can read them here: WP:BLPSPS). These sources are great. As a practical matter, you can also please feel free to make proposals here of any particular sentences or details you think we add to the entry (and note which source it's from); generally I and other editors will be able to check and add those more quickly. Reading full articles to synthesize and select information from will go slower. But I will definitely read both of these, probably a bit later today. Thanks for the references! Using Robert Barron (bishop) as a model for a Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop who is a social media influencer and subject of media attention, there are parameters in the Barron infobox that also would correspond to the Bishop Baez bio and are independently verifiable on the Catholic-Hierarchy website. I think it should be fixed now--I had used the "Christian leader" infobox because it's most commonly used on en-Wikipedia but I switched it to the "Bishop" infobox so now it should allow for all the same parameters on the Robert Barron page. innisfree987, you are the best! I will be working on this infobox template in my sandbox and edit the actual BLP infobox one section at a time, slowly and deliberately. I have the Spanish page always open for my reference point. I think we are off to a good start! I'm sure the bishop appreciates your attention to detail, given that he was editor-in-chief of an academic journal in Rome for some time and is a published author. He would expect nothing less. Well thanks, en-Wikipedia is far from perfect but especially for biographies of living people, we understand and take quite seriously the fact that entries can impact the lives of real people. So we strive for accuracy. In fact, for what it's worth, if ever anyone notices a problem with a biography (or information in other entries) about themselves, they can email the same OTRS volunteers I mentioned above for help getting it fixed, without needing to learn how to edit Wikipedia themselves (which I know can be daunting).
