GNIS ref supports renaming to Sierra Pelona Ridge
[edit]This article was brought to my attention when an editor linked to it from List of mountain ranges of California. I saw that USGS GNIS only supports it as a ridge, not a mountain range. So I reverted the list entry. I also changed this article to call it a ridge, not a range, as supported by its sole source: U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: Sierra Pelona. Its GNIS entry lists the primary name as "Sierra Pelona" and an alternate name as "Sierra Pelona Ridge". The reference provides no support for calling it "Sierra Pelona Mountains". A web search indicates locals interchangeably call it Sierra Pelona Ridge or Sierra Pelona Mountains. So I'm not arguing against including "Sierra Pelona Mountains" as an alternate name in the text, as it now does. A further search can probably find sources for that since it has a much lower bar than the title of the article does. So the source supports renaming the article from "Sierra Pelona Mountains" to "Sierra Pelona Ridge". This would also apply to Category:Sierra Pelona Mountains. As a courtesy I'm first asking if there are significant objections (and they'd have to have better reasons than WP:DONTLIKE to be significant) before I submit proposals to rename the article and category. - OK, this note has been posted a few days. I'm still not 100% sure this would be completely uncontroversial among locals who may use either name - but the lack of complaints improves that outlook. I see at WP:MOVE that one doesn't have to request renaming if it fits 3 WP:RMUM criteria: 1) the target name isn't taken, 2) the title hasn't already been discussed on the talk page, 3) it's "unlikely that anyone would reasonably disagree". I'm going to take the fact that the USGS GNIS source supports "Sierra Pelona Ridge" and not "Sierra Pelona Mountains" as reason others are likely to concur with this and it would be upheld in discussion if any came up. So I'll proceed with the move/rename for this article. The same-named category will get a speedy renaming request to follow this rename. Ikluft (talk) 07:31, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
- The category speedy renaming request for Category:Sierra Pelona Mountains -> Category:Sierra Pelona Ridge expired. It was due to an objection from an editor whom I think was making up non-existent restrictions to the speedy C2D criteria. But any objection at all blocks a speedy nom. So a full CfR request was submitted: WP:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2019_November_1#Category:Sierra_Pelona_Mountains. Ikluft (talk) 05:05, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
- Done FYI - the category renaming discussion completed successfully. Ikluft (talk) 00:22, 12 November 2019 (UTC)
