2'nd ,3'rd or 6'th largest mosque in the world?
[edit]- 6'th: http://www.proaudiomiddleeast.com/paa/article.asp?cid=1057

It is definitely not the 3rd or 4th largest as both the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca and the Faisal Mosque in Islamabad are larger in terms of covered area (prayer halls) and their courtyard capacity. Sheikh Zayed Mosque is jockeying for 5th or 6th place with the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore, which continues to have the largest courtyard of any mosque in the world. The covered area of Sheikh Zayed Mosque is larger than that of the Badshahi Mosque but it has a smaller courtyard. For now, it should stay in 6th place until it's area and capacity is proven. One way to do a crude comparison is to go on Google Earth and obtain pictures of the contenders from the same height, e.g. 500 m and then to do an overlay of the pictures to come with a general idea of area. The Google Earth measuring tool can also be employed to ascertain the rough dimensions. One thing's for sure, we cannot rely on a magazine or newspaper article claim. The article that claimed that this was the 3rd largest mosque in the world was totally outlandish and without any basis in reality. Simply do an overlay of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque and the Hassan II Mosque to see how easily the Hassan II Mosque beats the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in terms of both covered area and courtyard capacity.
The Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina rank No. 1 and 2 respectively in terms of area and capacity without any doubt. Under no circumstances does the Sheikh Zayed Mosque come anywhere close. So it is not the 2nd largest mosque by any standard.
It's the 6th largest - Straight from the contractor's mouth http://www.halcrow.com/html/our_projects/projects/grand_mosque.htm —Preceding unsigned comment added by Poloplayers (talk • contribs) 23:42, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
When I took a tour in the Mosque, the tour guide said "2nd largest on the penninsula" and "4th Largest in the world". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.134.183.215 (talk) 15:34, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
Older Name
[edit]when Shiekh Zayed was Alive the official name of the Mosque was "Sheikh Zayed Al Kabeer Mosque), which is after the Grand Father of Shikh Zayed, after the Death of Sheikh Zayed it was decided that to name it after him.
also the beautifull desing is similar to Indian style mosques like the one in Delhi. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ioj (talk • contribs) 11:11, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
