The article says Column 'composed' the lyrics except the last verse; however I have a modern arrangement published by Boosey which say he 'adapted' the lyrics 'from an old ballad' - which rather suggests to me that the lyrics are mostly traditional. Right, I've had a go at tidying up the list of artistes who've recorded versions: it's now in chronological order, and I've deleted a few of the ones who don't have wikipedia pages - I've left Maura Shaftoe in for the moment, although she doesn't have her own page, because she does at least show up in an Amazon search. The section's still a bit imperfect, but at least it seems to make some sort of sense now Dom Kaos (talk) 14:58, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There's nothing in the song to indicate that her family killed her for trying to marry the guy. Considering that when the song was written people routinely died of infections it's just as likely the girl died of natural causes.
