It seems like when I was a kid, it was often hyphenated as such: Shawnee-Mission.
The naming could be for the Shawnee Indian Mission, the two major cities Shawnee and Mission, or even the Shawnee Mission School District (which I believe came before the postal district).
All I know is that when you ask people where they are from, some answer "Shawnee Mission". I think that is a woefully incorrect answer, since there is no such city. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.70.156.3 (talk) 06:48, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
