clean up

I'm doing a general brushup of the article. It is pretty good actually. Just trying to make it a bit more neutral sounding, while keeping the content. BTW, there is a pretty high level of detail, but I think that's fine, given that Shawn is in the news and such. After 2008 (or her retirement), we may want to skinny it down more. But it is good to have the detail now. —Preceding unsigned comment added by TCO (talkcontribs) 00:52, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Pretty much done. Would like to know if we should add the trials results to the table (and are there medals awarded?) I am a bit intimidated to edit a table in wiki world, though.TCO (talk) 01:42, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

I just edited a few facts that were incorrect (Johnson doesn't do a Tkatchev on bars), and added in missing information such as the other American World All-Around champions and the third floor performer in team finals at 2007 Worlds. There were also a few minor typos. So no major changes from me! MochaChip99 (talk) 15:27, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

nice.TCO (talk) 19:10, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Someone added a bunch of citation requests (especially for scores). I will get around to getting these in there. It is not so daunting as it looks, because one source can be used per meet (perhaps even a source like USAG that covers several of the meets.)TCO (talk) 13:24, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Because she accepted an invitation to give the pledge at the DNC convention doesn't make her a Democrat. There's a 50-50 chance that she is but she hasn't said either way. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jwagnerdsm (talkcontribs) 14:44, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Technically, she can't be anything until she's 18. Blackngold29 18:17, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Sure she can. Most states have Young Democrat (and Young Republican) organizations, that she could be a part of. I have no idea where Jwagnerdsm gets the "50-50 chance" from. Just because there are two possibilities (not that there are in this case, but that's a different point), doesn't mean they're of equal likelihood. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.55.217.118 (talk) 03:50, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

She can be a democrat, just not a listed one. Its just your personal view. I think someone should follow to see what are her views on this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.180.105.44 (talk) 22:23, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

College?

Has she committed to do gymnastics at a college yet? If so, where? Thanks. 98.215.86.209 (talk) 16:18, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
I think she went pro. She has talked about going to an Ivy League school. I imagine that the endorsement money she's earned, her noteriety, as well as her 4.0 (on an easy classload however) would make that a possibility.TCO (talk) 13:21, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Shawn is not eligible to compete in NCAA gymnastics because she has accepted endorsements for the Olympic Games (meaning she has forfeited her amateur status). SkittlzAnKomboz (talk) 19:53, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
What universities, before she forewent her eligibility, recruited her? Smuckers It has to be good 15:41, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
Iowa, Michigan, Stanford, Nebraska, Georgia, and Alabama offered her scholarships. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.113.173.70 (talk) 18:06, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Stanford was very interested in her, and if I recall, she talked about visiting the campus on an unofficial recruiting visit. Let's just say she didn't have the best visit, and it went wrong. University of Georgia was her first NCAA choice, but she is no longer eligiable, but has stated many times if she were to compete in NCAA gymnastics she would go to Univ. of Georgia in a heartbeat. Univ. of Nebraska-Lincoln was high on her list as well. I do know others include Univ. of Florida, Penn State Univ., and as above poster wrote, Univ. of Iowa, Univ. of Michigan, Univ. of Utah, and Univ. of Alabama. She was highly, highly recruited at a young age and would have excelled at the college game, but she's doing her thing right now, with Olympic medals and all. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.166.218.39 (talk) 21:57, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the information, but, if I may ask, why did her Stanford visit go wrong? Smuckers It has to be good 22:57, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

This is to "Smuckers" : Shawn visited Stanford University about two years ago on a recruiting visit. I think previous posted eluded to the fact that Shawn was insulted (though, not intentional) by a professor, and she said the chemistry wasnt there...I think the insulter said something about her work ethic that slipped out and was one of those "Did I just say that..." things. As soon as he said it, she lost interest with Stanford. She visited the university of Georgia and fell in love with the campus and it is well known (at least by people interested) that Georgia was her #1 choice for competing in NCAA, with the rest of her choices going something like Nebraska, Utah, Alabama and Penn State in that order. She even gave the Georgia head coach (name slips my mind) a verbal commitment if she didn't kill her eligibility. But now since thats out of the question, Shawn will most likely be headed to the east coast for academics, most likely Brown, Harvard, Princeton or Yale. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.91.229.5 (talk) 03:51, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

She can probably go wherever she wants, is she interested in Yale?Jetfred29 (talk) 05:41, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Kolinko

I like most of your changes. However, I think it's a bit off to list only her new skills in the table below. I would ask that we go back to having it part of the text (gives parallelism of structure) with how skills in 2006/7 are handled.

If you want a list of skills at the end, would be better to list the entire routines.TCO (talk) 13:35, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

I have no objection to adding all the skills she performs in her routines. I rearranged the skills to the end to have them all in one place, but I didn't add anything to them. If you can source all her skills for the last however many years, please go ahead and add them. :) I commented some of it out because it wasn't clear what it was saying, not because I didn't think it was notable. Having a list of her skills in the body of the text may be out of place, though. If she fell on a skill or was the first one to perform it, then it is relevant, but otherwise, I think for the sake of organization and clarity, it may be best to have it all in one place. Kolindigo (talk) 16:52, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

The point is that those skills are ONLY the recent upgrades. Not all of her notable skills. Within the text there is a clear flow, that the original author (not me) had of describing her career, where certain set of skills was added as she went to elite and then a certain set of upgrades were recently added. So I think it makes more sense for that particular list to be back in the chronological career description.TCO (talk) 13:47, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Silver Medal at Rio, 2007?

I noticed she "only" got a Silver Medal in Rio de Janeiro in 2007 on the Floor. What happened? Smuckers It has to be good 08:51, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

What do you mean 'what happened'? She didn't win the gold, that's what. Maybe she stepped out of bounds? Who knows. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.166.218.35 (talk) 06:25, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

There are videos of the competition on yuotube. Shawn won silver, while her teamate Rebecca Bross won gold. (bross was too young to compete in Beijing but will be a senior level gymnast in 2009) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.172.147.109 (talk) 04:28, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Better Picture?

I was thinking we should have a better picture of her in the article, since she is barely visible in that photograph. Perhaps if she wins gold tonight we can get an image of that. I have seen many pictures that would be great for this article, but of course we would have to get the copyright holder to license it and such. Anyone agree?--Minimidgy (talk) 20:40, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

A better picture would be nice. As you said, the problem is licensing. I've sent a few e-mails, but I don't know if it'll get anywhere. Calebrw (talk) 21:04, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Might I ask where you have sent e-mails out to? I have friends with the Des Moines Register & they have 300+ photos of her (see: Ultimate Shawn Johnson gallery). I may be able to get permissions to use at least one of them. JP Frye (talk) 04:58, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

PS: I found out why that was being marked unsigned, sorry, I'm new here... anyways, back on TOPIC now -- if we wanted to use a picture from his lady, why not get permission to use a better one that is from her?? like this picture Jayson 'Ace' P. Frye (talk) 05:46, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the image is liscensed (AFP PHOTO / FRANCK FIFE OLY-2008-GYMNASTICS-FINAL-PODIUM-USA), which means that Johnson's official site can use it, but Wikipedia can't. We don't really support the use of fully copyrighted material. I did send an e-mail to John Cheng (see above) but I believe he's at the Olympics and he might not get back to me right away, if at all. Either way, these type of images (ones that regular people take) can be the best because they are the only ones that own the copyright, instead of the linked image, where AFP most likely owns the copyright, not Frank Fife. We would have to contact AFP's corporate headquarters and request permission and they would almost certainly deny, as it is their best interest not to acquiesce to our request. Hope that makes sense. Calebrw (talk) 14:32, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
That most certainly makes sense, thanks for that. :-) Well, then I suppose the hunt continues -- maybe I'll attend an event of hers locally & snap a few shots then. She'll be back in town to show off those medals sooner or later. Ha... I'm from the same area she is if you didn't catch on to that. Jayson 'Ace' Frye (talk) 23:47, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
I did catch on to that. ;) Calebrw (talk) 01:15, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Future

In the interview with Bob Costas tonight (Friday, US TIme) JOhnson didn't seem like she expected to be at the 2012 games in London. Even saying she thought her "shining moment" was the floor exercise last night. Wvucheerjr (talkcontribs) 00:55, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Agreed. I think she's tired and has put a lot into this. Was hoping to take it over the top and then be done with it. Is obviously disappointed at not acheiving the AA gold, she was favored to get. And in any case, women's bodies generally don't take gymnastics well as they mature. I think she wants to eat some food and get a period and move on. —Preceding unsigned comment added by TCO (talkcontribs) 00:52, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Her interview on 8/19/08 with Costas (after she won the beam gold) was much more positive toward the idea of appearing in the London 2012 games. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.208.158.173 (talk) 06:48, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

She will not go to London in 2012. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.113.173.70 (talk) 18:08, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Do you have a source? As said above she sounded somewhat positive about going in her Costas interview. Blackngold29 19:21, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

I think it's all gonna depend on how well her body takes it. Between now and 2012 she'll be appearing in competitions so she'll know if she's ready by the time the London games roll around. Bettyfizzw1 (talk) 02:04, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Um, the new picture...

Where did it come from? Who is this User:TheBostonianLonghorn person? (their user profile says Bridget Sloan?) Does anyone know how he/she got permissions for that picture? etc. etc.

It's really not a great quality either. What is everyone else' opinion on this? --Jayson 'Ace' Frye (talk) 23:43, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

It's a file from the Commons, seems fine at first glance. It is better than the previous one, though I am surprised that nobody has uploaded one from the Olympics. Flickr does have a few, but they are screenshots of NBC broadcasts and thus (unless the uploader has permission from NBC, which is doubtful) are copyright violations. Blackngold29 23:51, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
Alright, well, the whole situation seems suspicious to me. The picture, yes at first glance is fine & it is better than the previous, but it seems like someone cropped it & increased it's size. So, it makes me wonder where the source is. Another thing is the caption for it "Shawn Johnson on top of the all-around podium at the 2008 U.S. National Championships." She has a gold medal on her neck from what I can see & for both team all-around & individual all around, she didn't win gold. Well, either way, I will be shooting pictures at her welcome home party next Tuesday, I will likely get a good shot or two to post. -- Jayson 'Ace' Frye (talk) 23:59, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

She did win a gold medal on the balance beam--220.127.51.66 (talk) 07:29, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Awesome, I'm jealous. Blackngold29 03:08, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
The current file, Image:Shawn Johnson.jpg is cropped and resized version of Image:Nationals 2008 All Around.JPG. It's not resized much, but it's just a bit smaller. Also most of the chromatic noise has been removed, but the luminance noise remains. The second image was uploaded to Commons by User:Mangostar. Looking at TheBostonianLonghorn's Gallery, it seems clear that this user has uploaded just a few images from the 2008 National Championship. I guess I don't see anything out of the ordinary. My guess is that the images were taken by friend or relative of "TheBostonianLonghorn" AKA "Bridget Sloan" during that event and uploaded to Commons. Now I can't prove any of that, but it's my gut feeling. Calebrw (talk) 03:47, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I'm TheBostonianLonghorn. I attended the 2008 National Championships when they were in Boston this June and took several pictures of the gymnasts. Most of them weren't the best, but since most of the gymnastics articles didn't have pictures at that point, I thought something was better than nothing. If you have any questions about the images, please let me know. I'm just a gymnastics fan, not a professional photographer. BTW, the reason I have information about Bridget Sloan on my profile is because I created her article (I probably should remove it since the article has now been expanded). I'm not so sure about the Image:Shawn os08.jpg. It states the author as GettyImages, which I believe is a professional photography company. And the source as "google.com" which doesn't even make sense. I highly doubt it's not copyrighted. Blackngold29 21:25, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Criticism on her and gymnastics

Is there a page we can criticize the outfits of her and gymnastics in general? She is only 16 and the one piece she has almost is a thong (well it almost rides up her bottom). Seriously, gymnastics and swimming (mention this because in the olympics this is what I know 16 year olds can participate in with revealing outfits), this is definitely sexualizing children in sport. I am not the only one who says that many articles have noted that. I mean even the pervs are asking her to marry after seeing her in that outfit (yahoo article I read). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.127.51.66 (talk) 07:26, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

They are Atheletes and need to compete in the most comfortable way. Wearing less clothing usually constitutes that. Men used to wear speedos in swimming until the speedsuits which are faster came around. In track the women wear sport bikinis because it is more movable. the athlete needs to move to compete and the more movement the easier it is. It may seem sexual but it is also necessary. Also that is complete opinion of yours, you need some articles to back it up Superbowlbound (talk) 20:39, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
If you can provide the articles that state this then you are welcome to add them, though I would suggest it be to a more general, say the gymnastics article, unless there is a specific mention on Shawn. It seems to be an overall complaint, not just her. Blackngold29 12:17, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Pledge of Allegiance shouldn't be in article?

I realize she led the Pledge of Allegiance at the DNC, but is this really necessary in an article about a gymnast. She has so many other things in her personal life that are more significant than this. I think it should be removed.--Minimidgy (talk) 01:56, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

I think it's notable and we should keep it. I've started a section on post Olympics public appearances and moved it to there.TCO (talk) 02:52, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
Does it really need five citations though? I don't think anyone disputes the fact itself, the only question is whether it should be in the article or not. --Jameboy (talk) 18:32, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

I love Ortega Taco Sauce

It makes my taco pop. Should there be any mention of this? It has started to become a meme.

That's debatable. Perhaps if she endorces more products a section like that would be appropriate a la Rachael Ray.
Memes are hardly debatable unless a significant source picks up on it. This is the kind of thing that no one will care about in a week or two. Plus, the "meme" wouldn't be notable, more likely just the commercials she's been in. Joshua Gross (talkcontribssignature) 03:36, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Capital punishment for her stalker?

This has GOT to be vandalism, unless Florida is more backwards than before I moved away: "He could face capital punishment for the attempted child sexual abuse crime in Florida.[42]" -- Source 42 makes no mention of this that I can see. The WP page on Capital Punishment in Florida makes no mention of anything less than murder being punishable by death, although there is apparently some debate about child rape (not just attempted) possibly being allowed. The Onion

The Onion [4] has a new video claiming she broke her leg and was put down. This is a comedy bit, and she is of course not dead. Yet edits will be made. Perhaps this video should be mentioned in prose so people will have the joy of its mention without losing encyclopedic accuracy. Perhaps a "references in media" section. I don't create articles here, so not sure how the powers that be prefer it, but someone who is familiar is welcome to give it a shot. This is ridiculous! After viewing the humorous onion video about Johnson being put down, I quickly came to this article in order to cleverly change the text so that it would appear she really was killed by her parents. However I immediately realized I had been preempted in this endeavor by other users. This is completely unfair and counter-productive, if the edit had been made by someone in my standing on wikipedia it is much more likely to have stood.- Moshe Constantine Hassan Al-Silverburg | Talk 01:06, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

I heard in an interview that she gave with an American comedy sport reporter (don't know his name but I think he's quite famous) that she'd grown from 4ft 8in to 4ft 10in the six months before the interview. So maybe she's had or is having a very late growth spurt of sorts during her lay-off from the sport. Cls14 (talk) 11:58, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

i've heard she is pretty close to 5 foot now. Not sure though. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.82.43.222 (talk) 23:42, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

2010 training information

I would like to rewrite the list of skills, just to organize it, better (stylistic copyediting, headings, Oly order, etc.). Also, will add some calirfications about how performed (e.g. into pit) While doing that, can anyone please confirm that she threw the Amanar? Watching the video, I honestly can't count the twists that well, or see that she got it around.

Article to do list: NOV2010

  1. first pass through for all items, emphasis copyediting
  2. combine advertising and endorsements
  3. improve honors section
  4. check all links: A. Check validity, B. Clean up bare websites (figure out how to use templates), C. Fix dead links
  5. Create separate notes and references sections (if feasible, research it)

removing textbox for addded references

There are 65 references. They are good sources. They are distributed throughout the article. The article does not mostly come from one source. It's basically a very well sourced article. If someone disagrees, please explain. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.82.33.250 (talk) 22:46, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

structuring

The "other projects" is too much of a laundry list. Needs my copyedit structure. I am going to separate out the DWTS as a full para (too buried and longer content). Make a section for "public appearances" (with Democratic pledge, etc.). Then a section for other projects for the music video and her book. We can then add (or even subtract) some bullets, after this. but based on what we have now (in length and diversity) some better structure is needed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.82.33.250 (talk) 23:33, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

Advertising and endorsements sections have significant overlap

These two sections need to be merged. Please discuss rationale for disagreement. 96.248.6.169 (talk) 20:42, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

rewriting competetive history

Am going to rewrite the competitive history. We have pretty good sources (news stories or meet results) for the bulk of her results, but am wondering about some of the qualitative content. Seems generally true, from my knowledge, but would be good to have bit more sourcing. More overview articles like the SI 2006 article would be helpful. Espeically wrt Junior Career. I guess I'm going to need to read a lot of the refs. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.248.6.169 (talk) 21:12, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

structure discussion

Some things I want to change in the structure. Others where something bigs me, but not sure which way to go.

1. Want to move the stalking incident out of the Celebrity section. It seems different in tone then the other things (something done to her, rather than an activity she did). Also, you could say the stalking was a result or sign of celebrity, but not so clear if it was a result of her gymnastics or non-gymnastis (e.g. TV) activities, which is what the Celbrity section seems to be. I think the news stories said it was reaction to seeing her in the Olys. could look at Steffi Graf knifing as a model. Probalby like to make it a separate (short) but elevated heading.

2. I like having that honking table at the end, but then I also wonder if it makes more sense to have it next to her career section. also, I like it, but it also has some overlap with the medal graph on the side and even with the text. Not sure what is best strcuture...

3. Probably move 2008 skills out of competetive history. Where to? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.82.33.250 (talk) 22:32, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

I'm inclined to agree with (1) and (3). My only concern about (2) is its honking size. (giggling)
My restructuring should be considering a starting point, not an end. Here're my thoughts:
  1. I felt it a little funny putting the stalking incident in Celebrity but I thought it should be subordinate… but to what? In other words, it's worth a mention, but I don't think it's own major level section.
  2. If you could figure out a way to make it a side panel, that might work.
  3. What do you think about making her skills a table?
--UnicornTapestry (talk) 22:45, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Agreed. I'm kind of messing with other stuff for now.

1. OK.

2. Interesting. We could kill it, also. I feel like there is a lot of well tabulated data though. Maybe make it hideable?

3. Suits.

When you're ready. Your idea for #2 is intriguing.

just saying shawn should be going to worlds lol she is it and she is the perfect girl to go they are crazy for not letting her go!!!!

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

This thing is getting 40,000 views per month. SJ competed in Nationals and Classics but the article says naught about it. Girl has huge Q-rating, Nike contract, 2012 hopeful, etc. And we don't have any talk page updates since I was a permabanned IP in 2010? Sheesh, Wiki. The rest of the Internet is progressing. This stuff is all over Twitter, Facebook, even some MSM!

Jesus wept.  :(

Done Since it's short n sweet, I will incorporate the information in the article. However, next time please could you specify the exact edit you would like making, rather than just providing info. Egg Centric 14:38, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Why is this page locked? When will it be unlocked? And to Egg Centric, why should one specify a exact edit rather than providing info? This is exactly why the page should be unlocked.--BeckiGreen (talk) 20:09, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Name change

The name shouldn't be changed to East until name change has been confirmed. So far the only reliable source I was able find discussing the name change is an article from The Des Moines Register[5]. They say that they tried to confirm the name change, but "Johnson’s handlers did not respond". Politrukki (talk) 06:35, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

She's has changed her own name on social media to Shawn Johnson East, so I think that pretty much means that that is her name. :) Melody1118 (talk) 23:57, 8 September 2016 (UTC)

The next generation

She is acting as a role model to women (see Bratayley) who might compete in the 2020 or 2024 Olympics. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Phorgan1 (talkcontribs) 08:09, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
