@Egghead06:, @DivineAlpha: - I've declined semi-protection just for the minute, as I think the IP could be construed to making a good faith attempt to tone the drug abuse allegations down a bit. I've had a go at making a compromise between your edits, which hopefully is something everyone can agree with. If that's reverted or changed without discussion here, we can revisit our options then. We'll see. Also think your change does not show the severity of the ban. Seven months is quite severe and he was not only banned by West Ham but suspended fron all football by the Football Association.--Egghead06 (talk) 13:50, 11 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
While that's true, when you compare the suspension in relation to the rest of his career compared to, say, Ched Evans, it doesn't seem quite so important. I suspect the IP is Shaun Newton or somebody associated with him who would rather forget about the episode altogether (which certainly ties in with the BBC Sport source). I don't mind putting the seven month ban back in, which does have significance; I think the IP is mainly upset about the drugs allegations. As you say, we'll see what happens from here. @Ritchie333: My apologies to the anonymous user, but I was involved because the content was updated/changed without a source (and also the way it was written). DivineAlpha16:29, 11 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure other footballers like Rio Ferdinand and Lee Bowyer would like to wipe away history and forget about their errors with drugs and drug testing. Don't think it is Wikipedia's place to remove reliably sourced information on this subject.--Egghead06 (talk) 16:34, 11 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have restored the factual elements of the previous text. This was a lengthy ban and was widely reported. I also think the previous text (with the exception of the bit about his career being derailed) is actually more neutral than the term 'drug misuse'. Nzd(talk)04:16, 2 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

After reading this article i immediately checked the online poker ranking to verify the piece. I was amazed at Newton's new-found skills, especially his seven card stud statistics which were amazing. My only hope is that Mr Newton will uncover this wild conspiracy and overturn the harsh ban. A footballer of his quality deserves his chance so lets give the Newton faithful what they want. Free Newton indeed.
